Simple Recipe for OvercomingSuffering and Embracing Presence

Suffering is universal and built into the structure of life—every life form encounters obstacles necessary for evolution and growth. Rather than seeking to eliminate obstacles or positive-think our way past them, the most effective response is to accept each moment as if you had chosen it. This shift in relationship to what arises—from resistance to acceptance—dissolves unnecessary suffering created by the mind's identification with thoughts and complaints. The practice works across two levels of suffering: the mind-created kind that stems from unconscious thought patterns, and the body-based challenges that come with embodied existence. Without obstacles, there would be no human evolution.

Why Does Every Life Form Encounter Obstacles?

At the foundation of Tolle's teaching lies a simple observation: suffering and obstacles are not aberrations or punishments. They are woven into the fabric of existence itself. From the moment any life form comes into being—whether human, animal, or plant—it faces challenges and precarity. Life is inherently hard. There is no life form that escapes this. Humans encounter obstacles to growth and expansion throughout their lives, from childhood through old age, in relationships, health, work, and circumstance.

This reality troubles many people. They look at their lives and see a pattern: wherever they turn, obstacles appear. Some conclude that life is actively sabotaging their happiness, or that the universe is against them. Others adopt the New Age belief that if they simply maintain positive thinking hard enough, obstacles will cease. But Tolle points out that positive thinking, while valuable and capable of producing real shifts in perception, does not exempt you from encountering the obstacles that life will place in your path. This is not pessimism—it is realism. And this realism is essential to understanding how to work skillfully with suffering.

What Are the Two Sources of Suffering?

Tolle identifies two distinct layers of suffering. Understanding the difference is crucial to working with them.

Mind-created suffering: Much of the suffering humans experience originates not from external circumstances but from the unconscious use of mind itself. When you identify completely with thought—when you believe you are your mind—you operate from what Tolle calls the "egoic mind." This mind continuously generates conflict and unnecessary problems. A challenge that could be solved easily becomes, through unconscious mental processing, a much larger problem. You create suffering by resisting, complaining about, and dramatizing situations through thought patterns you aren't aware of.

Tolle uses his own awakening as an example. For years, he suffered from depression and internal anguish. The suffering served a purpose: it eventually brought him to a breaking point. "I can't live with myself anymore," he said one night in bed. At that moment, he realized something crucial—the "myself" that couldn't live anymore was itself an illusion, a construct of the unhappy mind. Before that realization came, however, he had to endure years of suffering. The suffering was necessary. It was only through hitting that wall that he became conscious enough to see through the illusion of the mind-created self.

This is why Tolle says you must experience the suffering that comes from unconscious use of mind. There is no bypass. You cannot think your way out of it while still identified with thinking. Only when the suffering becomes unbearable do you finally stop identifying with the mind that creates it. Only then does awakening become possible.

Body-based suffering: Even after the mind's suffering is dissolved through awakening, there remains the suffering that comes with having a physical form. As the body ages—and all bodies age—it encounters limitations, pain, illness, and eventual decline. No amount of exercise, nutrition, or longevity medicine can prevent this process. At some point, the body that was once a source of pleasure and identity can become a source of burden and suffering.

Tolle shares the example of his mother, who had always deeply identified with her body—its beauty, its appearance, the attention it received. As she aged, she developed hip problems, fractures, and increasing frailty. Rather than accept the isness of physical aging, she clung to her former identity and resisted her changing body. This resistance created tremendous suffering. There were rare moments when she could disidentify from her body, but they were brief. "This is the destiny of many humans," Tolle observes. The suffering wasn't primarily the limited movement—it was the identification with the body-based identity and the resistance to change.

What Is the Simple Recipe for Working with Suffering?

Tolle offers a remarkably practical solution: Accept each moment as if you had chosen it.

This is not a demand that you believe you literally created every circumstance or that you should blame yourself for hardship. The new-age tendency to ask "How did you create that?" when someone slips on a banana peel and breaks their leg is, Tolle notes, both unhelpful and often untrue. Whether you consciously or unconsciously created a particular obstacle is, in his view, beside the point.

What matters is this: the moment already is the case. It is already here. Whether you chose it, caused it, or it simply appeared, the present reality cannot be changed retroactively. So why not accept it as if you had chosen it? This shift in relationship to what arises is transformative.

When you accept a moment as if you had chosen it, your entire attitude shifts. You stop being the complaining entity that says "This shouldn't be here" or "I'm a victim of circumstance." You go with the isness of things. From that acceptance, if action is needed, you can act from clarity rather than resistance. If no action is possible, you don't compound the situation with mental resistance and complaint. The obstacle then dissolves more quickly because you are no longer fighting it with the mind.

This practice works across both types of suffering. For mind-created suffering, it interrupts the automatic complaint-loop that the unconscious mind generates. For body-based suffering—aging, illness, limitation—it prevents the additional layer of mental suffering that comes from resistance and identity-loss. You move from "This is terrible and shouldn't be" to "This is what is, and I accept it." That acceptance doesn't deny the difficulty, but it removes the psychological multiplication of suffering through resistance.

Why Are Obstacles Necessary for Evolution?

Tolle returns repeatedly to a crucial point: obstacles are not obstacles to growth—they are the very mechanism of growth. Without obstacles, no life form would evolve. Without challenges, there would be no human evolution whatsoever. What looks like a barrier to your progress is actually, potentially, an opening. That which seems to stop you can make you more conscious if you work with it rightly.

This reframes the entire relationship to difficulty. You are not a victim of a universe that keeps throwing problems your way. You are a conscious being encountering the necessary friction through which consciousness itself develops. Every obstacle that arises in your life—especially when you can accept it as if you had chosen it—becomes material for deepening awareness. The obstacle is the path.

What Is the Role of Thought Identification in Suffering?

Underlying both layers of suffering is a fundamental misidentification: believing that you are your thoughts. When you identify with thinking, that identification becomes what Tolle calls ego. Ego is not a thing—it is a process of thought-identification. Many people carry around hostile, life-denying, critical, attacking entities in their heads and believe that voice is who they are.

To become free of ego means becoming free of identification with thought. This doesn't mean thinking stops. It means you are no longer compulsively attached to or controlled by thoughts. Thoughts arise and pass like clouds in the sky, but you are not the clouds, and you are not fighting them. This freedom from thought-identification is what allows you to work with suffering without being consumed by it. It allows you to accept each moment as if you had chosen it, because you are no longer the defensive, complaining entity that resists reality.

Where to Go From Here

Begin experimenting with the practice of accepting each moment as if you had chosen it. Start small, with minor irritations or small obstacles, and notice what shifts when you stop resisting and instead adopt acceptance. Observe how quickly situations resolve when you are no longer fighting them mentally. Notice the difference between the primary suffering (the actual difficulty) and the secondary suffering (your mind's complaint about the difficulty). These are often separate, and the secondary is where your power lies.

Examine where you are still identified with thought—where you believe the critical, complaining voice in your head is you. Practice observing thoughts arise without immediately believing or acting on them. This is the path to freedom from ego-created suffering. Finally, look at your own obstacles not as evidence that life is against you, but as the exact friction necessary for your consciousness to deepen. Every challenge is an invitation to wake up.

[0:00] and every human suffers

[0:03] every life form suffers because life is

[0:06] hard

[0:07] and challenging and precarious

[0:10] for every life form from the moment

[0:13] life comes into being life is

[0:16] challenging and precarious

[0:19] for humans for animals for plants

[0:23] every life form encounters obstacles in

[0:26] its attempt

[0:27] to grow and expand

[0:31] and it continuously encounters obstacles

[0:34] to its expansion every human

[0:37] in one form or another if you come into

[0:40] this world

[0:41] very quickly you'll find obstacles

[0:44] seeming obstacles to your expansion

[0:48] and growth and well-being and flowering

[0:51] i think you can all if you think about

[0:54] your so-called life

[0:57] how many obstacles life seems to have

[1:00] put in your path

[1:02] towards happiness and

[1:05] some people perceive life as

[1:08] life continuously is sabotaging

[1:11] my attempts to find happiness why is

[1:14] that

[1:16] and then they have these strange

[1:18] theories that

[1:20] god is against me or whatever the theory

[1:24] is

[1:24] but it does seem like and this is

[1:27] related to the buddhist term dukkha or

[1:30] suffering

[1:33] wherever you go you will find

[1:36] life is sometimes helpful and then

[1:39] obstacles again

[1:42] and all and this is perceived as some

[1:45] people believe if you only protract this

[1:47] positive thinking continuously

[1:50] you will no longer encounter obstacles

[1:52] but that unfortunately is not the case

[1:56] positive thinking is a great thing can

[1:58] be extremely helpful and

[1:59] bring about certain shifts in you but it

[2:01] does not free you

[2:04] from experiencing the obstacles that

[2:07] life will put on you up in your path

[2:10] and the challenges that come

[2:13] so those obstacles whether they come in

[2:15] the form of

[2:16] loss or illness or

[2:19] relationship problems many of them arise

[2:23] from their own mind

[2:24] because your mind creates an enormous

[2:26] amount of problems that are quite

[2:28] unnecessary

[2:29] but the mind doesn't know that so the

[2:32] mind creates an enormous amount of

[2:34] conflict

[2:35] that is unnecessary in your life

[2:39] that's one kind of obstacle is your own

[2:42] mind

[2:44] then and again you are you need to

[2:47] experience

[2:49] the consequences

[2:53] of the obstacles that your own mind

[2:56] creates

[2:57] the conflicts and the unnecessary

[3:00] problems that your own mind

[3:02] because you identified with the mind

[3:05] creates

[3:06] you need to experience the suffering

[3:08] that you create for yourself

[3:10] out of that unconsciousness of

[3:12] unconsciousness means completely

[3:14] identifying with the mind the egoic mind

[3:17] which in many cases transforms

[3:20] challenges

[3:21] which could be solved easily into much

[3:24] bigger problems

[3:26] so you have the your mind created

[3:30] obstacles that you ultimately create

[3:32] yourself because you're not conscious

[3:34] enough and then you

[3:35] encounter suffering this is one level of

[3:39] suffering

[3:41] and this is you need to experience the

[3:44] suffering that comes through unconscious

[3:46] use of the mind in order to awaken it's

[3:49] only through the suffering that

[3:51] eventually you go

[3:52] i can't take anymore as i happened to me

[3:55] when i was in bed one night and said i

[3:57] can't live with myself anymore

[4:02] and it's and then somehow i realized

[4:04] this myself that i couldn't live with

[4:06] anymore

[4:07] was an illusion an illusory entity and

[4:11] very

[4:11] unhappy mind-created entity but before i

[4:14] realized that i had to go through this

[4:16] suffering for years and years

[4:19] so the suffering worked

[4:23] it fulfilled its purpose and then you

[4:26] have another level of suffering or

[4:28] obstacles

[4:29] obstacles come to you seemingly from the

[4:32] outside

[4:33] that suddenly you have an accident

[4:38] an illness that's a kind of outside it's

[4:40] just something seems to

[4:42] happen to you that you have not

[4:43] contributed to

[4:46] uh something happens

[4:49] to somebody close to you dies as an

[4:51] accident

[4:52] many things can happen but you seem i

[4:55] haven't created that

[4:56] of course

[5:00] in new age it's very normal to say when

[5:03] things go wrong in your life

[5:06] the typical new age person will say

[5:09] how did you create that

[5:13] you slipped on a banana skin and broke

[5:15] your leg

[5:17] why did you create that how did you

[5:20] create that

[5:21] it's an interesting question i don't

[5:23] want to go into this

[5:24] whether even those obstacles or

[5:27] challenges that come to you

[5:29] not seemingly not from your own mind but

[5:32] from

[5:33] the outside did you still create that or

[5:36] not

[5:37] let's leave that aside i don't want to

[5:39] convince anybody

[5:41] one way or another

[5:45] i have a much more simple recipe here

[5:49] which goes like this instead of telling

[5:51] people

[5:53] you better look at your life and see why

[5:55] you created that or how you created that

[5:59] i say accept

[6:03] each moment as if you had

[6:06] created it accept each moment

[6:10] as if you had wanted it or caused it

[6:14] wanted it to happen

[6:17] i can't remember my own writings

[6:23] it's always not good to go into memory

[6:26] don't quote just present moment

[6:34] so but if you live whatever happens you

[6:37] accept

[6:38] this moment as if you had chosen that's

[6:40] the one i wrote

[6:41] except accept

[6:45] each moment as if you had chosen it so

[6:48] that's a good recipe for working because

[6:51] if it already is the case you might as

[6:54] well accept

[6:55] whatever is as if you have chosen it

[6:57] because it's already here so i'm not

[6:59] telling people you chose it

[7:01] maybe you did maybe you didn't doesn't

[7:03] matter

[7:05] it still accept it as if you had chosen

[7:08] it

[7:09] that shifts things that your whole

[7:11] attitude shifts

[7:13] and you it dissolves more quickly than

[7:16] whatever the obstacle is but let's go

[7:19] back to the suffering

[7:21] the first the suffering that derives

[7:23] from your own mind

[7:25] creates conflict and all those things

[7:29] that create

[7:30] suffering and then at some point you

[7:32] awaken

[7:34] and then what remains is the suffering

[7:36] that comes with having a body for

[7:38] example

[7:39] because eventually the body gets older

[7:42] no matter how

[7:45] much you go to the gym every day

[7:49] no matter how fantastic your nutrition

[7:52] is

[7:53] no matter how many pills fall longer

[7:56] life you take which is all fine and good

[8:01] but of course every form eventually

[8:03] dissolves

[8:05] and the time comes when the body can be

[8:08] perceived as a burden

[8:10] almost the older you get the more likely

[8:14] it is to happen and so

[8:19] of course you might then say old age

[8:21] isn't so bad

[8:22] if you consider the alternative which is

[8:25] you die younger and then you don't have

[8:27] to experience the body getting

[8:29] fragile and old but if you get old

[8:32] the body can become problematic

[8:37] a source of suffering potentially

[8:40] but the those challenges if approached

[8:43] correctly

[8:45] don't have to turn into suffering

[8:49] accept each moment as if you had chosen

[8:52] it

[8:53] if you can go with the isness of things

[8:56] there's no complaining entity that says

[9:01] something about being a victim and

[9:03] complaining

[9:04] how dreadful things are now i wish my

[9:08] mother

[9:09] had learned that lesson when she

[9:12] suffered in that way because she had

[9:13] always identified very much with her

[9:15] body

[9:17] good looking always nicely dressed going

[9:21] out

[9:22] and like to be looked at very normal

[9:24] thing for

[9:25] many people and then the body got older

[9:29] and older

[9:30] and then

[9:34] hip problems and other fractures

[9:37] and this and got worse and worse and the

[9:41] unhappiness grow and grow not so much

[9:44] of the limited movement

[9:50] but the identity and so

[9:54] so much was in the body that was

[9:56] tremendous suffering i tried to free her

[9:59] and occasionally there were moments when

[10:01] she could disidentify from body but very

[10:03] very brief

[10:07] and that is the destiny of many humans

[10:10] but this the suffering is really

[10:14] that every end every life form

[10:16] encounters the obstacles that every life

[10:19] form encounters

[10:21] whether they come in younger age older

[10:24] age middle age in whatever form

[10:26] [Music]

[10:28] these things are absolutely necessary

[10:32] without which there would be no human

[10:34] evolution

[10:35] whatsoever and no life form would ever

[10:37] evolve

[10:38] if the life form did not encounter

[10:41] obstacles

[10:42] so that which looks like an obstacle

[10:45] is actually always

[10:48] potentially an opening potentially

[10:52] it that seems to stop your progress in

[10:56] life

[10:58] always potentially can make you more

[11:00] conscious

[11:02] so you can use every obstacle that

[11:04] arises in your life

[11:06] if you can especially works especially

[11:09] quickly

[11:10] if you accept each moment as if you had

[11:13] chosen

[11:14] it and when it looks this moment is an

[11:17] obstacle

[11:18] you go with it instead of complaining or

[11:21] running away from it and

[11:22] and then accept and then

[11:26] act if action is possible or don't act

[11:29] if no action is possible

[11:31] you identify with thinking and the

[11:34] identification with thinking becomes ego

[11:39] and there are many people in this world

[11:41] who are stuck with

[11:42] hostile life denying

[11:46] continuously critical and attacking

[11:49] entities that they carry in their head

[11:51] and they believe that is who they are

[11:53] to become free of ego means becoming

[11:56] free of

[11:58] thought identification with thought

[12:03] that's the end of the eagle

[12:10] [Music]

[12:32] you

Positive thinking is helpful but doesn't exempt you from life's obstacles. Instead, accept each moment as if you had chosen it. This shift in relationship to what arises—from resistance to acceptance—dissolves suffering more quickly than mental resistance. The key is disidentifying from the complaining mind and going with the isness of things.
Suffering rooted in unconscious thought patterns and resistance is necessary for awakening—it eventually teaches you to stop identifying with the mind. Body-based suffering from aging and illness cannot be eliminated, but it doesn't have to turn into psychological suffering if you accept each moment without resistance.
Mind-created suffering comes from resisting reality and identifying with thoughts; it's unnecessary. External obstacles (illness, loss, accident) are part of embodied life. Both can be worked with the same recipe: accept each moment as if you had chosen it, and they become opportunities for deeper consciousness rather than sources of suffering.
You're not saying you wanted it to happen. The moment is already here. By accepting it as if you had chosen it, you stop fighting reality with your mind. This acceptance dissolves resistance, allowing you to act clearly if action is needed, rather than compounds the situation with mental complaint.
Ego is identification with thinking—believing the critical, complaining voice in your head is you. This identification creates unnecessary mental suffering. To become free of ego means becoming free of compulsive thought identification, which allows you to observe thoughts without being controlled by them.
Without obstacles, no life form would evolve. Challenges force you to develop new capacities and deeper consciousness. What looks like a barrier to progress is actually the mechanism of growth. When you accept obstacles and work with them consciously, they become openings for expanding awareness.
