Why One-Sided LoveCauses Ego Suffering

Unreciprocated love is not fundamentally different from reciprocated love—both arise from the ego's core sense of incompleteness and the desperate attempt to fill that void through another person. Whether love is returned or rejected, the suffering reveals the same underlying condition: the belief that wholeness can be found outside oneself. True love, in contrast, emerges only when the inner lack is recognized as illusory and the seeker understands their own completeness.

Why Does the Ego Turn to Love to Fill Its Void?

At the root of the ego lies what Eckhart Tolle calls "a very deep-seated sense of lack of not enough of not complete." The ego is built on the perception of incompleteness. It knows it lacks something and continuously searches for ways to fill that hole. This search operates continuously except for brief moments when something external enters the ego's field—a possession, an achievement, a person—and for a fleeting instant, the sense of lack disappears. But it never lasts. The relief is temporary. The void returns, and the ego turns its attention elsewhere, always looking to the future, always seeking the next thing that will finally make it feel whole.

One of the primary arenas where the ego pursues this completion is the realm of intimate relationships. When attraction strikes, the mind unconsciously projects an extraordinary power onto the other person: he or she is the one who will complete me. This is not love in its pure form—it is, Tolle explains, an almost obsessive attachment to an image, a form. The ego has found its ultimate strategy for filling the void: another human being.

What Happens When the Other Person Feels the Same Way?

If the beloved also experiences the same projection—if they too believe the other person will complete them—a mutual agreement forms. Both partners feel they have found "the one." The natural next step is to formalize this agreement through marriage or a binding commitment. We sign contracts, exchange vows, make promises to ensure that this person will never leave, because the stakes feel impossibly high. If they abandon the agreement, the consequences are dire. Our sense of self, our very wholeness, depends on them staying.

But Tolle points out: "This is where the film's end the director says cut here but life goes on." The honeymoon phase carries an artificial completeness. During those early months, the temporary delusion that the other person is fulfilling you masks the underlying lack. But gradually, reality intrudes. The other person has a pain body. They have their own wounds, their own unfulfilled needs, their own incompleteness. They cannot possibly meet the enormous, impossible task of making you feel whole. Doubt creeps in. Ordinary existence—jobs, family obligations, daily friction—returns. The person is no longer behaving in the way they should to complete you and make you happy.

How Does Reciprocated Love Become Suffering?

When the other person fails to live up to the role of completer, something critical happens. The lack that was temporarily covered over by the love relationship re-emerges, but now it is interpreted through a new lens: he or she is causing my pain. The mind attaches the sense of incompleteness, aloneness, and fear—the basic egoic condition—to the other person. They become the problem. Love, which was built on the illusion of completion, now periodically transforms into hate and aggression. When the person does not fulfill their obligations to complete you, hostility and withdrawal follow. There may be periods when it works again, moments of reconnection, but the cycles become increasingly painful. The happiness of marriage gradually gives way to the unhappiness of coexistence. The honeymoon becomes divorce.

This trajectory is not random. It is the inevitable outcome of attempting to resolve an internal condition through an external form. As Tolle explains, "It was an attempt to fulfill you through some form some outer form and then all that happens in the end you sends the unfulfillment more strongly and then you blame that form for causing you that pain it's egoic pain."

What Makes One-Sided Love Different—and Worse?

The person who asked the question—whose love is not reciprocated—experiences an even more acute form of this same suffering. The lack is felt even more strongly because there is no mutual agreement to temporarily cover it up. The beloved does not return the feeling. The ego is not given even the brief illusion of completion that a reciprocated relationship provides. The pain is immediate and undeniable.

Moreover, the mind becomes hyperactive in one-sided situations. Fantasy and stories proliferate around the beloved. The self becomes caught in a painful self-image: the one who loves unreturned, the one who is unworthy of love, the one left behind. If the obsession continues unexamined, that initial love can, remarkably, transform into hate. The person who seemed to be the source of all fulfillment can come to seem like the source of all pain. In some cases, what was called love was never love at all—it was simply "the deep-seated need of the ego focuses on one form."

What Is Actually Happening in "Falling in Love"?

To understand one-sided love, it is essential to see what falling in love actually is. It is not a recognition of the beloved's true nature or a meeting of two whole beings. Rather, it is a projection of wholeness onto another person. The ego, which knows itself to be incomplete, unconsciously perceives in the other person a solution to that incompleteness. The beloved is not loved for who they are; they are loved for what they are perceived to represent: completion, wholeness, the end of suffering.

This is why "falling in love" is, in Tolle's term, an "obsessive attachment." The focus of the self becomes entirely concentrated on one other person, who is perceived as the one who will make the self whole. The beloved is no longer a separate person with their own needs, wounds, and incompleteness. They are a form onto which the ego has projected its salvation. The person is secondary to the role they are expected to play.

Does Recognizing This Pattern End the Suffering?

Tolle does not propose that understanding this mechanism immediately dissolves the pain. The pain is real; it arises from a genuine condition—the sense that something is missing. But the teaching points toward a different relationship with that sense of lack. The ego's strategy is to seek completion externally. The alternative is to recognize that the sense of incompleteness itself is based on a misunderstanding.

True wholeness is not something to be achieved or obtained from the future or from another person. It is the recognition of what you already are when the ego's constant narrative of lack falls silent. In those brief moments Tolle mentions—when the lack is momentarily not felt—you are experiencing your true nature. These moments are not caused by what you have acquired or achieved. They are access points to a completeness that does not depend on circumstances changing.

Where to Go From Here

If you find yourself in a one-sided love situation or in a relationship cycle of attachment and blame, the first step is to recognize the mechanism at work. Notice the fantasy, the stories, the painful self-image. Observe how the beloved is being used, unconsciously, as a solution to an internal problem they cannot possibly solve. This recognition, without judgment, is itself liberating. It begins to separate your sense of self from the outcome of the relationship.

From there, the question becomes: Can I recognize the sense of lack not as proof that I am incomplete, but as a pattern of the conditioned mind? Can I experience moments of presence—brief as they are—where that lack is not felt? Those moments are pointing to something real: a wholeness that does not depend on another person choosing you. True love, if it arises, emerges from that recognition of your own completeness. It then can exist without possession, without fear of abandonment, without the desperate need for the other person to be a certain way. Love that is rooted in wholeness does not turn into hate. It does not swing between intense need and aggressive blame. It simply is—present, without demanding the impossible from another person's limited, wounded, and ultimately separate self.

[0:20] you

[0:24] why is love not received

[0:27] why does one way love traffic situation

[0:31] arise I'm placing my aching heart before

[0:36] you please operate thank you thank you

[0:52] all right I will begin the operation now

[1:11] one form loves and the other form

[1:15] doesn't reciprocate why is that and the

[1:20] pain that comes with that great pain

[1:22] from many people it's enormous pain

[1:32] now you know that the basics condition

[1:36] of the self or the ego itself is one of

[1:39] a very deep-seated sense of lack of not

[1:46] enough of not complete and then it tries

[1:49] to fill through strategies to see the

[1:54] mind mate self tries to fill that lack

[1:57] that it knows and fields almost

[2:00] continuously except for brief moments

[2:02] when something has been put in there and

[2:05] then for a moment the lack is not felt

[2:08] never lasts long so it looks for the

[2:11] next thing and it looks to the future it

[2:14] looks to add choose me to fill that hole

[2:17] that is always there where I'm not

[2:20] myself I'm not complete I haven't I'm

[2:24] not home I haven't arrived and so all

[2:29] kinds of strategies are there but in one

[2:33] of the main areas where it looks to

[2:35] fulfill that lack is in the area of

[2:39] relationship the other person he or she

[2:44] and then when that happens the entire

[2:51] focus of the self becomes focused on one

[2:56] other person who is perceived

[2:59] unconsciously as the one who is going to

[3:05] complete me

[3:06] make me whole he or she is the one and

[3:14] so almost an obsessive attachment forms

[3:20] to that image that form of that person

[3:24] and that is called falling in love

[3:31] and sometimes if you're lucky the other

[3:37] person feels the same about you that you

[3:41] are going to complete him or her also

[3:44] and of course that is great you both

[3:49] feel that you are going to complete each

[3:51] other and then probably you will want to

[3:55] get married sign a contract just to make

[3:59] sure that for the rest of your life

[4:01] you're going to complete me and you're

[4:04] not going to leave me because that would

[4:08] have dire consequences if you'd broke

[4:11] that contract and left me don't you even

[4:14] think about that and then you marry this

[4:23] is where the film's end the director

[4:25] says cut here but life goes on and you

[4:31] marry and after perhaps even during the

[4:39] honeymoon the first doubt comes into

[4:43] your mind whether this actually works

[4:49] whether the other is going to live up to

[4:53] that enormous task of fulfilling and

[4:58] completing you and then you start

[5:03] ordinary existence jobs family and

[5:10] gradually it doesn't seem to be working

[5:14] anymore the completion he the sense of

[5:18] lack comes back he isn't he or she isn't

[5:22] behaving in the way that he or she

[5:25] should to make me feel a complete make

[5:29] me happy you read it in ads I don't know

[5:32] if you read it in India looking for man

[5:38] or woman to make me happy

[5:43] Oh who could live up to that and nobody

[5:53] can and then the lack that was covered

[5:56] up by the temporary delusion that this

[5:59] person was fulfilling you this person

[6:01] who has a pain body what you didn't know

[6:04] that the temporary illusion that this

[6:08] person should be fulfilling you that

[6:11] suddenly the sense of incompleteness

[6:16] aloneness fear not being as re-emerges

[6:23] but now through your mind you attach

[6:26] that to the other person and say he or

[6:29] she is the cause for what I feel you're

[6:33] feeling again the basic egoic condition

[6:37] you're feeling it more strongly now

[6:39] because of her little while it was

[6:41] covered up by the love relationship and

[6:48] so gradually the love then periodically

[6:52] turns into hate and every time the

[6:55] person is not complete fulfilling it's

[6:58] up his obligations or her the love turns

[7:02] into aggression hostility withdrawal

[7:07] complete withdrawal what's wrong with

[7:09] you nothing is wrong just don't want to

[7:14] talk whatever or throwing something

[7:17] whatever they do and then and then fall

[7:24] and then the relationship fluctuates for

[7:26] while it works again and then it doesn't

[7:29] work it works again it doesn't work and

[7:31] then it becomes the periods when it

[7:33] doesn't work become longer and you feel

[7:38] it feels bad the happiness of marriage

[7:43] turns into the unhappiness of just

[7:48] coexistence the happiness of the

[7:50] honeymoon becomes the divorce and

[7:53] they're all one really

[7:56] so yet it was an attempt to fulfill you

[8:00] through some form some outer form and

[8:03] then all that happens in the end you

[8:06] sends the unfulfillment more strongly

[8:08] and then you blame that form for causing

[8:11] you that pain it's egoic pain this is

[8:15] the plane that arises out of love-hate

[8:17] relationships now the questioner of

[8:21] course is not at that stage because it

[8:26] is one-way traffic as he puts it that

[8:31] great love is failed for this form but

[8:36] it's not reciprocated what do you do

[8:40] then then you feel that lack even more

[8:43] strongly and it's painful

[8:55] and there's the tendency for the mind to

[8:58] weave all kinds of fantasies around it

[9:02] all kinds of stories and the self gets

[9:06] in there becomes a very painful

[9:09] self-image of me and it can then if it

[9:16] goes on it can happen that that

[9:19] attraction turns into hate can happen

[9:23] it's not saying it will happen in your

[9:25] case and then you see it never was love

[9:29] in the first place so what is called

[9:32] love is there deep-seated need of the

[9:35] ego

[9:37] focuses on one form

Preguntas Frecuentes

Falling in love is not a mistake but a symptom of the ego's core condition: a deep sense of lack and incompleteness. The ego unconsciously seeks another person to complete what it perceives is missing within itself. This is not love in its pure form—it is obsessive attachment disguised as love, driven by the desperate hope that another person can make us whole.
In mutual love, the ego temporarily covers its sense of lack with the illusion that the other person will fulfill it. In one-sided love, that covering is never provided—the lack is felt immediately and acutely. However, both relationships eventually expose the same underlying truth: no external person can resolve the internal sense of incompleteness. Both paths lead to the recognition that wholeness must come from within.
Yes, according to Tolle's teaching. If the obsession continues without awareness, unreciprocated love can transform into hatred because the beloved becomes the apparent cause of the pain. The person who seemed to promise fulfillment comes to seem like the source of rejection and suffering. This shift reveals that what was called love was never love—it was the ego's attempt to use another form to fill its void.
The path is not to suppress the feeling but to recognize what is actually happening: you are using this person as a solution to an internal sense of lack. Begin to observe the fantasy, the stories, and the painful self-image without judgment. As you separate your sense of self from the outcome of the relationship, the obsessive attachment naturally loosens. Wholeness is not something they can give or withhold—it is something you recognize within yourself.
True love arises not from need or the attempt to fill a void but from inner completeness and presence. It does not depend on the other person being a certain way or staying with you. True love exists without possession, fear, or expectation because it is not rooted in the ego's survival strategy. It is simply a recognition of wholeness in both yourself and the other person.
The initial high is the temporary relief of the ego's sense of lack—the beloved briefly fills the void. But this relief is illusory because the other person is not actually the source of your completeness. As ordinary life resumes and the beloved reveals their own limitations and pain body, the covering falls away and the lack returns, often more intensely because it has been temporarily denied.
