Attraction While Committed: Runanubandhaand Body Integrity

Sadhguru

9 min de lecture

Attraction to someone outside a committed relationship is not simply about willpower or suppression—it reflects underlying energetic patterns and karmic obligations (runanubandha) that bind us across lifetimes. Rather than shame the body or deny attraction, spiritual maturity involves understanding the root of these impulses and maintaining the integrity of commitment through conscious awareness, not denial. The question reveals how modern relationships often lack genuine understanding of what commitment means at the level of energy and obligation.

What Does It Mean When You're Attracted to Someone While Committed?

Attraction arising within a committed relationship is a common human experience, yet how we interpret and handle it shapes the quality of our relationships and inner life. Sadhguru approaches this question not from a moralistic standpoint—where attraction is "bad" and must be repressed—but from a practical understanding of how human energy, obligation, and what yogic philosophy calls runanubandha actually function.

The first principle is this: attraction itself is not the problem. The problem emerges when we act on attraction outside the boundaries we have consciously established. Sadhguru emphasizes that the body naturally recognizes beauty, vitality, and compatibility in other beings. This recognition is not a failure of character—it is simply how the physical body operates. What matters is what you do with that recognition and, more fundamentally, what you understand about why it is arising.

When someone finds themselves attracted to another person despite being in a committed partnership, it often points to an incomplete understanding of commitment itself. Commitment is frequently treated as an external contract—"I promised, so I will behave"—rather than as a conscious choice rooted in understanding. This distinction is crucial. A relationship based on external rules and suppression creates internal conflict and builds resentment over time. A relationship based on conscious choice and genuine compatibility can accommodate the reality that attraction exists without being threatened by it.

How Does Runanubandha Shape Relationships and Attraction?

Runanubandha is a Sanskrit term that refers to the energetic debt or obligation we carry from past interactions—not only in this lifetime but across multiple lifetimes in the yogic understanding. When two people enter into a relationship, particularly an intimate one, they create a new runanubandha between themselves. This is not merely emotional; it is an energetic bond that creates a responsibility between two beings.

According to this framework, if you are already bound to someone through committed relationship and children or deep shared karma, and you develop attraction to another person, you are creating a problematic situation at the energetic level. It is not that attraction is forbidden—rather, the issue is one of integrity. You are attempting to create a new runanubandha (through thoughts, energy, or actions) while simultaneously maintaining responsibility for an existing one. This divided allegiance creates dissonance in your own energy system.

The yogic view does not shame the body or the fact of attraction. Instead, it emphasizes that the body itself is a form of commitment. Your physical form carries the impact of your choices. When you use your body and energy in ways that contradict your conscious commitments, the body itself becomes fragmented. Over time, this fragmentation manifests as emotional confusion, physical tension, and a diminished capacity to experience genuine intimacy with anyone.

Runanubandha explains why casual approaches to commitment fail so consistently. Two people may promise to be together, but if they do not understand the energetic reality of what they are doing—creating an actual bond that shapes their energy bodies and consciousness—they treat the promise as something they can break whenever inconvenience or attraction arises. The consequence is not punishment from outside; it is the natural result of creating chaos within one's own being.

What Is the Role of Body Integrity in Maintaining Commitment?

Body integrity, in Sadhguru's framework, means maintaining alignment between what you have consciously committed to and how you use your physical body and energy. This is not about suppression or denying the reality of attraction. Rather, it is about honoring the choices you have made at the energetic level.

Many people approach commitment through the lens of "I should not do this because I promised." This creates an internal battle—the attraction is there, the desire may be there, but you are forcing yourself to abstain. This forced abstinence generates internal pressure and often leads to eventual breakdown of the commitment. The alternative is to shift from external discipline to genuine understanding: "I do not pursue this attraction because I have consciously chosen a different path, and I understand what that choice means for my own integrity and energy."

When body integrity is maintained, several things happen. First, your own energy becomes coherent rather than fragmented. Second, you are able to show up more fully in your committed relationship because you are not internally divided. Third, the quality of your presence and intimacy actually deepens because it is not undermined by secret attractions and energetic leakage toward others.

The body itself is a form of intelligence. If you use it consistently in ways that contradict your conscious commitments, the body begins to lose trust in your own mind. This manifests as a kind of internal confusion where you find yourself acting against your own stated values repeatedly. Maintaining body integrity means the body and mind are in alignment, and this alignment is the foundation of psychological stability and genuine contentment.

Can Attraction Be Managed Without Suppression or Denial?

Sadhguru's approach sidesteps both extreme positions: blanket suppression of all attraction (which creates neurosis) and acting on every attraction (which creates chaos). The middle path is conscious awareness combined with conscious choice.

Attraction, from this view, is information. When you find yourself attracted to someone, you can observe it, understand what it reflects about your own state of being, and then consciously choose your response. Perhaps the attraction reveals something missing in your current relationship—not something your partner is failing to provide, but something you yourself have not yet developed internally. Or perhaps it reveals that you are in a state of emotional or energetic depletion and are seeking external stimulation to compensate.

Without suppression, you acknowledge the attraction. "Yes, I notice this person is appealing. I notice my body is responding." Without denial, you do not pretend it is not there. Instead, you see it clearly and then make a conscious choice about what you will do with that observation. That choice is made not from fear ("I should not because something bad will happen") but from understanding ("I choose not to pursue this because I value the integrity of my commitment and my own coherence").

The practice of conscious choice, repeated consistently, actually rewires your nervous system. Over time, it becomes easier to maintain alignment because the practice itself strengthens the capacity to choose rather than react. This is very different from suppressing attraction through willpower alone, which only creates internal tension and often leads to eventual failure.

What Does a Truly Committed Relationship Actually Require?

A committed relationship, in this framework, requires more than fidelity (not acting on attraction elsewhere). It requires actual conscious engagement with the other person and with the commitment itself. Many relationships fail not because one partner becomes attracted to someone else, but because the partners have never truly committed in the first place—they have simply agreed not to be with other people, which is a very different thing.

True commitment means choosing your partner repeatedly, not just once at the beginning. It means investing your energy, attention, and presence in that relationship even as attraction to others may arise. It means deepening your understanding of your partner and continuously choosing to be there. When a relationship is built on this foundation of repeated, conscious choice, the occasional arising of attraction to another person becomes manageable precisely because it is understood as separate from the commitment you have already made.

Sadhguru suggests that one reason external attraction becomes so seductive is that many people have not created genuine depth in their primary relationships. If your relationship is shallow—if you and your partner have not developed real understanding, real presence, real vulnerability with each other—then an external attraction (which can promise novelty, intensity, or escape) becomes genuinely tempting. Deepening your actual committed relationship removes much of that temptation not through suppression but through fulfillment.

How Can Someone Realign Their Energy and Integrity?

If someone finds themselves repeatedly attracted to others while in a committed relationship, the first step is honest self-inquiry. Are you in the right relationship? If you genuinely believe the answer is yes, then the question becomes: What internal work needs to happen for you to align your energy and body with your commitment?

From a yogic perspective, practices that cultivate body awareness—asana (posture), pranayama (breathing), and meditation—help restore the coherence between body and mind. When the body and mind are fragmented, managing energy becomes difficult. When they are integrated through consistent practice, maintaining alignment becomes natural.

Additionally, honest communication with your partner about what is arising can itself be part of the healing. This does not mean confessing every fleeting attraction or creating unnecessary drama, but it may mean acknowledging to yourself and your partner that you are navigating a period where you need to consciously recommit and rebuild presence. Many relationships have been deepened, not damaged, by honest acknowledgment of these moments and the renewed commitment that follows.

The deeper work involves understanding what specific need or deficit within yourself is being activated by external attraction. Are you seeking validation? Intensity? Freedom? Once you understand what is actually being sought, you can address it directly rather than trying to manage the symptoms through willpower alone.

Where to Go From Here

If you are experiencing attraction while committed, the path forward is not shame, suppression, or instant action on the attraction. Instead, it is honest self-inquiry: Do you want to remain in this commitment? If yes, what does genuine commitment actually require of you—and are you willing to provide it? What is this attraction revealing about gaps in your own development or in the depth of your primary relationship?

Understanding runanubandha—the energetic reality of commitment and obligation—can reframe how you relate to attraction. It is not a character flaw; it is information. And how you respond to that information shapes not only the future of your relationship but the coherence and quality of your own being.

Questions fréquemment posées

Yes, attraction itself is a natural physical response and not inherently a failure of character. The yogic perspective, as presented in this discussion, distinguishes between noticing attraction and acting on it. What matters is understanding why the attraction arises and maintaining conscious choice about your response while honoring your existing commitments.
Runanubandha refers to energetic debts or obligations that bind us across interactions and lifetimes in yogic philosophy. When you enter a committed relationship, you create a new runanubandha—an actual energetic bond. Developing attraction outside this bond creates fragmentation in your own energy, which is why maintaining body integrity matters even when no one else is watching.
Rather than trying to suppress attraction through willpower alone, the approach is to first understand what the attraction reveals about yourself—unmet needs, emotional depletion, or gaps in your primary relationship. Simultaneously, practices that integrate body and mind (yoga, meditation) help restore coherence. Finally, consciously recommitting to your actual relationship and deepening that presence often naturally resolves the pull toward external attraction.
Yes, many relationships deepen after acknowledging and working through periods of external attraction. The key is whether both partners are willing to engage honestly and consciously recommit. The real danger is not the attraction itself but the fragmentation and dishonesty that often accompanies it. When addressed with clarity and renewed commitment, these moments can actually strengthen relational bonds.
Body integrity means maintaining alignment between your conscious commitments and how you use your physical body and energy. It does not require suppressing natural responses but rather acting consistently with your stated values. When body and mind are in alignment, your nervous system becomes coherent and your capacity for genuine presence and intimacy increases.
External attraction often becomes compelling because the primary relationship lacks genuine depth. When you and your partner have not developed real presence, understanding, and vulnerability with each other, an external attraction (which promises novelty or escape) becomes more seductive. Deepening your actual relationship by bringing more consciousness and presence to it addresses the root cause rather than just managing the symptom.
