Teaching Wonder Through Song: ALullaby for Empathy and Love

Valarie Kaur, activist and founder of the Revolutionary Love Project, wrote World of Wonder—a children's lullaby sung by award-winning artist Ari Afsar—that teaches young listeners how wonder opens the heart to empathy, justice, and love. The song moves from simple observation of nature and people, through acknowledgment of difficult emotions and stories, to the recognition that inner feelings are gateways to understanding others and choosing compassionate action.

What Does Wonder Do for a Child's Heart?

The lullaby opens with Wonder Baby encountering the natural world: "ants on a leaf, birds in the sky, sweet little bee tree so high" (0:04–0:13). These lines establish wonder not as mere amazement, but as attention—a child's willingness to truly see what surrounds them. The refrain "you're a part of me, I don't yet know" reframes the world not as a collection of separate objects, but as an interconnected whole in which the child participates.

This move from observation to belonging is deliberate. By teaching children that they are "part of" nature—the sparkling sun, the sand, the waves, the shell (0:21–0:35)—the song creates a foundation for empathy rooted in kinship rather than abstract obligation. Wonder, in this framework, is the practice of recognizing that everything that exists matters to us because we are already woven into its fabric.

How Does Wonder Extend to People and Their Stories?

As the lullaby progresses, Wonder Baby encounters human difference. "People walk by, faces are new, so many colors, point of view. Where have they been, what have they seen? Their stories show me everything" (0:40–0:54). Here wonder becomes the active curiosity that turns toward strangers not with fear or indifference, but with genuine interest in their experience.

This is where Kaur's work as an activist becomes audible in the lyrics. She is teaching a stance toward difference: that the stories of others—those whose lives, histories, and perspectives differ from ours—are not obstacles to bypass but invitations to expand understanding. The child learns that wonder means asking, listening, and staying open to what other people's lives have taught them.

Why Does the Song Address Difficult Emotions and Injustice?

A crucial turn comes when the lullaby acknowledges that not all stories are gentle. "Sad stories make me turn away, but I keep listening. I get brave. I speak, I march, I dance, I sing. Justice is what we can bring" (1:05–1:22). This is a rare moment in children's media where a lullaby does not shy away from the child's instinct to retreat from suffering, but instead names it as real and offers a pathway forward through action.

Rather than insisting that the child feel comfortable with all emotions, Kaur validates the impulse to protect oneself ("sad stories make me turn away") while modeling that courage lies in staying engaged. The litany of actions—speaking, marching, dancing, singing—reframes protest and justice-work as expressions of care available even to the youngest listeners. Justice is not abstract; it is something "we can bring," suggesting that every person, every voice, every form of expression matters.

How Do Feelings Inside Become Doorways to Loving Others?

A particularly introspective verse follows: "When I want to run and hide, holding tears and fire inside, it's hard to wonder about anyone else, so I wonder about myself. Then it happens like a surprise: the feelings change before my eyes. Each feeling plays a special part in showing me how to love my heart" (1:33–2:00).

This sequence is radically honest about the nonlinear path to compassion. The song acknowledges that when a child is overwhelmed, frightened, or angry—"holding tears and fire inside"—the mature response is not to ignore these feelings or push through them, but to turn wonder inward. By wondering about oneself—asking what one needs, where the feelings come from, what they mean—the child develops what might be called emotional literacy. And crucially, this self-awareness becomes the ground from which love can grow.

Kaur models here a teaching rooted in her broader activist and contemplative practice: that personal healing and collective justice are inseparable. You cannot love others durably if you have not learned to hold and honor your own inner experience.

What Does It Mean to Wonder About Someone Who Is Unkind?

The lullaby then circles back to the encounter with human difference, but now with greater subtlety: "So when I see someone being mean, I wonder what's hiding underneath. Find what makes them behave this way. Love can make us very brave" (2:07–2:25).

This teaching is profound and difficult. Rather than simply instructing the child to return kindness for cruelty or to excuse harmful behavior, the song invites a deeper investigation: what does the person's meanness protect? What wound or fear or need is expressed through unkindness? To wonder this way is not to condone; it is to see the person as whole and complex, still worthy of love even when their actions cause harm.

The closing phrase—"love can make us very brave"—reframes love not as softness or passivity but as courage. Choosing to see and honor another's humanity, especially when they have hurt you, requires tremendous bravery.

Does the Song Address the Vastness of the World?

"Stars above, shimmering sea, the world is infinite just like me. I choose to love everything alive. What do you need to grow and thrive? Earth and people, creatures too, marvelous me, radiant you" (2:43–3:01). In these closing verses, the scope expands again. The child is reminded that they are not separate from infinity—that their inner life mirrors the cosmos's expansiveness. This is not escapism into abstraction; it is an invitation to ground love in concrete care: "What do you need to grow and thrive?"

The child learns to see themselves ("marvelous me") and others ("radiant you") as equally wondrous and worthy of nourishment. The lullaby closes with "when I wonder, my love can grow," returning to the central insight: wonder is not mere appreciation of beauty. It is a practice—a deliberate, cultivated capacity to see, listen, feel, and act from a place of genuine connection.

Where to Go From Here

Valarie Kaur's World of Wonder is available as a picture book published by Kokila/Penguin Random House. The lullaby, sung by Ari Afsar, offers both a musical resource for bedtime and a profound teaching for parents, educators, and caregivers on how to nurture wonder, empathy, and what Kaur calls "Revolutionary Love"—the practice of seeing and honoring the humanity in all people, even in the face of difficulty. Valarie Kaur's lullaby teaches empathy by beginning with wonder—the practice of truly observing nature and people around us, asking what stories others carry, and recognizing that we are interconnected. The song models staying curious even when stories are difficult, and turning inward to understand one's own feelings as a gateway to understanding others.
According to the lullaby, wondering about someone who is unkind means investigating what's hidden beneath their behavior—what fear, wound, or unmet need drives their actions. This doesn't excuse harm, but it opens the possibility of seeing their full humanity and choosing love despite difficulty, which the song describes as 'very brave.'
The lullaby teaches that when a child wants to hide or feels overwhelmed by tears and anger, the answer is to turn wonder inward—to ask what they need and honor their feelings. This self-awareness becomes the foundation for loving both oneself and others durably.
Revolutionary Love, as taught in this lullaby, is the practice of seeing all people and beings as part of a connected whole, remaining curious about their stories and struggles, and choosing compassionate action and justice even when it's difficult or requires courage.
Yes. Kaur's lullaby addresses sadness and injustice directly, acknowledging that children may want to turn away from difficult stories. It then offers concrete actions—speaking, marching, dancing, singing—as age-appropriate ways to participate in justice-making, reframing activism as an expression of care available to all.
The lullaby teaches that you cannot sustain compassion for others if you haven't learned to wonder about and honor your own inner experience. Personal emotional awareness and the commitment to justice are inseparable—both flow from the practice of wonder.
The refrain 'you're a part of me, I don't yet know' reminds children that they belong to a larger interconnected whole. By beginning with ants, birds, sun, and sand, the lullaby establishes kinship with nature, then extends this belonging to people and all living beings.
