The Truth About Love: BreakingFree From Inherited Lies

Don Miguel Ruiz teaches that our search for love stems from lies we inherited about ourselves—that we don't deserve love, that love must hurt, that we need someone else to validate our existence. The real transformation isn't changing lead into gold; it's recognizing that we use people to hurt ourselves and taking responsibility for our own alchemy. Love without self-love is merely the projection of our wounds onto another person, and real healing begins when we stop blaming others for the pain we create.

Why Do We Search for What We Already Don't Have?

Ruiz opens with a direct observation: "We search for what we believe that we don't have. We search for beauty, for Justice, for Love, for Perfection." This constant searching, he explains, is rooted in a fundamental belief—a lie we have accepted about ourselves. We believe that something essential is missing, that we are incomplete without external sources to fill the void.

The origin of this belief is the internalized voice Ruiz calls "the liar." From childhood, we absorb messages that we are unworthy of love, that love is dangerous and will hurt us. These are not truths; they are domestication—the learned beliefs of a society passing down its own wounds. "We are searching and searching and searching," Ruiz says, "and we are searching because we believe the liar lying all the time and we believe it." Faith, in Ruiz's language, means believing 100% in something without doubt. When we have faith in the liar's narrative, "thy will be done"—the consequence manifests as pain.

How Does the Liar Convince Us Love Must Hurt?

Ruiz distinguishes sharply between pain and love. "It will hurt but it's not love that hurts," he says. Yet we conflate the two because we have been taught to expect harm as proof of devotion. The mechanism works like this: we search for love with people who don't love themselves. This is the critical failure point. "How can we search for love with someone who don't love him or herself?" Ruiz asks. "What can you give if you don't love yourself? What can you give? Your anger, your jealousy, your envy, your possessiveness."

The liar has told us something insidious: "You need someone who needs you, and that's love." So we spend our lives seeking a person who needs us, using that need as justification for our existence. "Somebody needs me. When you find someone who needs me, that someone only will fulfill your selfishness." This is the critical insight: needing to be needed is not love; it is selfishness masquerading as devotion.

What's the Difference Between Selfishness and Self-Love?

Ruiz draws a hard line here. When we give from our own lack, what we offer is contaminated. "You only can give what you have," he states plainly. If someone tells you they love you, Ruiz asks, how do you know it's true? "You think that someone who loves you is going to give you their anger, their jealousy? They look every single moment to create a conflict, to humiliate you, to put you down, to abuse you, and they call that love." The pattern is universal: "I love you honey. Let me give you all my garbage, all my poison. You have to put up with me because I love you. And if you don't put up with my trash, that means you don't love me. And that will hurt me so bad, and my heart will be broke."

This is the transaction we normalize. To make it permanent, Ruiz notes with dark humor, "in order to be sure, we have to sign a paper that you will be mine forever and only mine." The control deepens: "I had to tell you how to walk, how to dress, what to believe, what not to believe. Oh, because if you know, I own you for many different lifetimes. It takes me long to find you, but I finally find you, and then I will get you, and you never leave anymore." This is the mythology of soulmates—the belief that one perfect person exists to complete us, disguising possession as destiny.

True self-love is radically different. It means valuing yourself enough not to accept garbage from another person. It means refusing to use someone else to justify your existence.

What Are the Flies and the Bees?

Ruiz introduces a metaphor for the two categories of human behavior. He "divides humans into categories: one is what I call the Flies, and the other is what I call the Bees. The Flies are looking for poo all the time. And the Bees are looking for honey." The image is crude but precise. What are you looking for in your life? What are you drawn to?

"Humans behave in two different ways: humans either behave like poo or behave like honey. You know that you behave like poo when you only attract flies. And of course, you behave like honey when you attract bees." This is not about judging others; it is about understanding that like attracts like. Your internal state magnetizes your circumstances.

The critical question becomes: what kind of partner do you have? The answer tells you what kind of alchemy you are performing.

What Is Real Alchemy?

Ruiz shifts from metaphor to direct teaching. "The real alchemy is not to change lead into gold. The real alchemy is to change poo into honey." But here's the trap: "The only problem is that humans are great alchemists, but in the opposite way. They see the honey. The honey is right there, and they transform everything into poo. That's what they do." Using their assumptions, their learned worldview, their faith in the liar, people take beauty and goodness and alchemize it into poison.

"They see something great with all these assumptions that they made, with the point of view that they learned by believing the liar. They turn that honey into poo, and then they are victimized by their own poo." This is the tragedy: we are not victims of external forces. We are victims of our own distorting lens.

Who Is Really Responsible for a Broken Heart?

This is where Ruiz's teaching becomes radically empowering and devastatingly honest. When we have a broken heart, "we blame the other person for everything. We blame, and we expect everybody else to see the monster. What the monster did to me. The worst person in the world." But Ruiz cuts through this narrative: "But you know the truth? The truth is that you use that person to hurt yourself. You did it. In fact, all your life, you try to use any person that you know to hurt yourself. You use them to hurt yourself. How can you blame anybody? That is the truth."

The other person is also using you—to hurt themselves. "They're not guilty. They use you, but they judge you. They blame you, and they make you feel guilty because you are the monster if they have the broken heart." This mutual projection is why relationships become chambers of mutual self-harm.

"Every time that you have a broken heart is because you use that person to break your own heart, because you need them to need you." The responsibility lands entirely on you—not as blame, but as power. "Do you understand? You take responsibility. You have awareness, and you can heal your heart just like this: boom."

Where to go from here

Ruiz's teaching points toward a specific direction: stop searching for love outside yourself and start examining the lies you believe about love. Ask yourself: What did the liar tell me? Do I truly believe I deserve love? Am I seeking someone who needs me, or someone I genuinely love? What garbage am I passing off as devotion? What honey am I turning into poison with my assumptions and judgments?

The path forward requires taking full responsibility for your own alchemy—not as guilt, but as reclamation of your power. Self-love is not selfishness; it is the foundation from which authentic love can emerge. Until you love yourself, you will only attract people who also don't love themselves, and the cycle of using one another to hurt yourselves will continue.

The liar represents the internalized, inherited beliefs we accept about ourselves—that we don't deserve love, that love must hurt, that we need someone else to validate us. These are not truths but domestication, the collective wounds passed down through culture and family. Ruiz teaches that we give 100% faith to these lies, and that faith shapes our reality.
No. According to Ruiz, needing someone to need you is selfishness, not love. Real love comes from self-love and wholeness. When you search for someone who needs you to justify your existence, you are using that person to fill your own void—and they are doing the same. This creates mutual self-harm, not love.
Ruiz teaches that like attracts like: if you behave like 'poo,' you attract 'flies'; if you behave like 'honey,' you attract 'bees.' You attract what you are internally. The real work is becoming someone who loves themselves, sets boundaries, and refuses to accept garbage from others. Your internal state magnetizes your external reality.
Ruiz observes that humans are alchemists who work in reverse. We see goodness, beauty, or love in another person, but through our assumptions and the lens of the liar's beliefs, we distort it into poison. We project our wounds onto others and blame them for the pain we create through our own distorting view.
You are. Ruiz teaches that you use the other person to break your own heart because you need them to need you. The other person is also using you to hurt themselves. This is not about blame but about reclaiming your power: when you take responsibility and awareness, you can heal your heart immediately.
Real alchemy is not changing lead into gold but changing pain into honey—transforming your internal state and the way you see others. Most people do the opposite: they take someone's goodness (honey) and alchemize it into poison through their assumptions and beliefs. True alchemy means healing your own distorted lens.
Ruiz suggests asking: Does this person give me their anger, jealousy, and abuse while calling it love? Do they try to control me and make me responsible for their feelings? Real love doesn't come with garbage, possession, or the demand that you put up with their pain. True love is given freely from someone who loves themselves.
