How Fear and Anxiety AreCreated by the Mind

Eckhart Tolle teaches that most fear and anxiety arise not from actual present-moment threats, but from excessive thinking—mental projections about the future, imaginary scenarios of things going wrong, and the mind's inability to distinguish between real threats and self-generated fearful thoughts. The body reacts to these thoughts as if they were actual dangers, triggering physical symptoms of fear. By recognizing this mechanism and deliberately shifting attention from thought to the felt presence of the body, one can step out of the fearful thought-stream and access a state of genuine presence, where fear dissolves. In some cases, fear may arise spontaneously from the "pain body" (accumulated old emotional energy), but awareness of the mechanism itself—whether thought-generated or pain-body-generated—is the beginning of freedom.

Are Your Fearful Thoughts Creating Your Anxiety?

Tolle begins by addressing a common complaint: after years of meditation and spiritual work, a person finds themselves in the grip of intense fear and anxiety—sometimes amplified by the very practice of "sitting with it." The first move is to investigate whether thoughts are the culprit. Fear and anxiety are deeply connected; in fact, Tolle observes that anger, when examined closely, often conceals fear beneath it. Even people who don't consciously experience fear may carry it in the background if they remain identified with the egoic mind.

The key diagnostic question Tolle poses is: What are the thoughts that accompany your fear? This isn't about judging the thoughts but observing them with honesty. Are you frequently thinking about worst-case scenarios? Are you projecting yourself into future moments, trying to control outcomes you have no actual control over? Are you imagining situations of suffering that aren't happening now and may never happen?

This pattern—excessive mental projection into the future—is where most anxiety originates. Tolle emphasizes a crucial distinction: "The actual situation would actually be easier to face…because there's nothing you can do there's no action you can take to remedy an imaginary situation except to stop thinking it." When a real crisis happens, you face it, give it your attention, and take appropriate action. But imaginary scenarios exist only in the mind; there is no external action that resolves them. You are "totally at the mercy of it."

Why Your Body Cannot Tell the Difference Between Real and Imagined Threat

Tolle explains a physiological fact that is central to understanding anxiety: the body does not distinguish between an actual external threat and a threat your mind is generating through thought. When you think fearful thoughts—when your internal narrative is "my life situation is critical," "this is a threat," "something bad is about to happen"—your body believes it. It interprets your thoughts as a report of present danger.

The result is palpitations, shortness of breath, and the physiological cascade of the stress response. Tolle shares a personal example: lying awake at night, experiencing intense physical symptoms of fear in a completely quiet, safe room where nothing is actually happening. "It's insane," he says. "It's a disease. But nothing is happening. Absolutely nothing." The fear is entirely self-generated through thought, yet the body reacts as if a predator were in the room.

This is why he emphasizes: if your mind is creating fear through thought, you must work with the thoughts themselves. You cannot simply endure the physical symptoms and hope they pass. The root is mental.

How to Stop Believing Your Mind and Step Out of Fearful Thought

Tolle's teaching here is precise and practical. You cannot stop thinking by trying to think less—that is futile. Instead, you must realize the futility and destructiveness of these thoughts and make a conscious choice to withdraw attention from them. This is not about controlling the mind; it is about redirecting attention.

The practice is to take a conscious breath and deliberately place your attention into the inner energy field of the body—the felt sense of aliveness beneath thought. This requires alertness and intention, especially if you are deep in a stream of anxious thinking. The gravitational pull of the mind can be very strong.

In early stages, you may not be able to fully escape the thought-stream. The fear may be so intense that you remain partially gripped by it. But here Tolle identifies a crucial turning point: knowing that you are in the grip of it is itself a step forward. The worst state is to be completely identified with the fearful thought, experiencing it as absolute reality. Once you create even a small distance—"a part of you that knows this is not totally real"—disidentification has begun. You are no longer completely merged with the fear.

As you continue to direct attention to the body and breathing, the fearful thought-stream begins to lose its charge. "The energy exhausts itself a little bit," Tolle says. Then, gradually, you can choose to step out of the fearful thoughts. The relief is palpable—"like a huge burden is suddenly dropped away."

What Is This Shift From Thought to Presence?

Tolle compares this to awakening from a nightmare. Everyone has experienced the moment of waking and realizing you are safe in bed. The nightmare was vivid and terrifying, but it was not real. The relief is instantaneous. In the same way, when you shift from identification with fearful thought into presence and awareness of the actual present moment, the fear releases. You look around—literally or figuratively—and realize that right now, this moment, is safe.

This shift is, in Tolle's words, "a form of awakening out of complete identification with thinking. It really is an awakening." It is a direct experience, not a belief. And you can observe it happening in yourself.

After you step out, thought will attempt to pull your attention back in. Tolle acknowledges this: the mind may say, "Come, come this way," offering new versions of the fearful scenario. At this point, you have a choice: do you follow it, or do you stay present? If you follow it, the cycle reactivates. If you remain in presence, thought loses its grip.

What If Fear Arises Without Any Detectable Thought?

Tolle addresses an important variation: sometimes fear or intense anxiety arises seemingly spontaneously, with no clear thought-pattern behind it. In these cases, what Tolle calls the "pain body" is at work. The pain body is an accumulation of old, unresolved emotional energy that lives in the body. Many people experience the pain body predominantly as anxiety or free-floating fear.

The pain body can surge suddenly, seemingly unprovoked. However, it typically flows into the mind quickly, producing fearful thoughts that give it a narrative. The fear then has a story attached: "Something is wrong," "I am in danger," "This will not end." The pain body feeds on these fearful thoughts; it wants the experience of fear because fear is its frequency, its energetic signature.

Even in this case, awareness is the key. You may observe that the fear is arising from the accumulated pain body rather than from a thought about a real external threat. This recognition itself changes the relationship to the fear. You are no longer fully identified with it.

Understanding Fear as a Frequency, Not Just a Concept

Tolle distinguishes between intellectual understanding of fear and the direct felt sense of it. Fear has a frequency—a particular vibration or energetic quality. When the fear-frequency is active in you, you inhabit a particular reality. Everything you perceive is filtered through it; the world appears threatening, unstable, dangerous.

But when you shift your attention into presence, you shift to a different frequency. "Nothing is changed outside," Tolle explains. "It's still the same room. You're a totally different reality in the same place. A totally different world in the same place as you shift from one frequency to different frequency."

This is not a metaphor. The nervous system actually shifts out of sympathetic activation (fight-flight-freeze) into parasympathetic calm. The chemistry of your brain changes. Your perception literally changes. The same circumstances are now perceived through a lens of safety and clarity rather than threat.

Where to Go From Here

The practical application of Tolle's teaching is immediate. First, develop awareness of your anxious thoughts. Do not judge them; simply observe: What story is my mind telling? Am I projecting into a future that hasn't happened? Second, recognize the body's reaction to these thoughts as a sign that the mind is creating a false narrative of threat. Third, practice deliberately redirecting attention from thought into the felt sense of the body—your breath, the aliveness in your hands and chest, the ground beneath you. This is not relaxation technique; it is a shift in identification from mind to presence. Fourth, accept that in the early stages, you may not be able to escape the thought-stream completely. The recognition that you are in it is itself progress. Finally, allow yourself to experience the relief that comes when you step out of fearful thought and into actual present-moment reality. That relief is your true nature—the absence of the false overlay of mind-generated fear.

[0:06] this person asks after many years of

[0:10] meditation and all the twists and turns

[0:12] of life amnon the grip of intense fear

[0:15] and anxiety it seems it was always there

[0:19] only more intense now sitting with it

[0:21] letting it be there seems to make it

[0:24] grow well fear anxiety which is a form

[0:36] of fear very common

[0:40] some people have it many have it in the

[0:42] background continuously and I would say

[0:46] there's some degree of fear even if

[0:49] you're not conscious of it if you if

[0:51] you're totally identified with the egoic

[0:55] mind you will have fear if only in the

[0:58] background and it may come out into

[1:00] other forms it come can come express

[1:03] itself as anger if you look at anger

[1:05] closely you'll usually find hidden

[1:08] underneath the anger is a state of fear

[1:10] so if there's fear one important thing

[1:17] is to of course you need to direct your

[1:19] attention to it you acknowledge that

[1:21] there's fear the question important

[1:24] question that arises is are there any

[1:29] thought process is connected with the

[1:31] fear in other words what are the

[1:34] thoughts that your mind is producing

[1:37] while you're feeling the fear is it

[1:41] possible that certain thoughts that you

[1:44] think frequently or bitterly produce the

[1:49] fear is it possible you project yourself

[1:52] into the next moment into the future

[1:54] moment excessively trying to control

[1:58] something that you have no control over

[1:59] what's going to happen to me or project

[2:03] or creating an imagining imaginary

[2:06] scenario of lawfulness that you might

[2:10] yet

[2:11] you might suffer it's not happening now

[2:16] but it might happen and many things that

[2:19] the thought activity excessive thought

[2:23] activity often creates scenarios of

[2:26] things going wrong that are not

[2:28] happening now may never happen often

[2:32] probably will never happen and even if

[2:35] they did happen the actual situation

[2:39] would actually be easier to face and the

[2:42] imaginary situation in your mind because

[2:44] there's nothing you can do there's no

[2:47] action you can take to remedy an

[2:49] imaginary situation except to stop

[2:51] thinking it but if an actual situation

[2:54] arises you face it and you give it your

[2:57] attention and then you take the action

[2:59] that you need to take but an imaginary

[3:01] situation you're totally at the mercy of

[3:04] it it's so it only exists in your mind

[3:07] so you need to see whether your mind is

[3:10] creating the fear by thinking fearful

[3:14] thoughts by projecting itself into the

[3:16] future and if if that is the case then

[3:20] you can see oh so I'm creating those

[3:25] because my body cannot tell the

[3:27] difference between an actual event

[3:30] that's happening outside and what my

[3:32] mind is producing so when when I'm

[3:36] thinking thoughts my life situation is

[3:38] critical if this is the basically what

[3:41] your thoughts are telling you then your

[3:44] body believes that this is the actual

[3:47] truth that you are being threatened at

[3:49] this very moment if the body doesn't

[3:51] know the difference that the tiger isn't

[3:55] in the room the threatening presence is

[3:58] your thoughts the body reacts in the

[4:01] same way whether there's a threat actual

[4:04] threat in the room all your thoughts

[4:06] prank create the same

[4:09] in palpitation seeking shortage of

[4:13] breasts because you're thinking fearful

[4:14] thoughts you go at night I had that for

[4:18] years upon to awful state it's insane

[4:25] it's a nice disease but nothing is

[4:30] happening absolutely nothing

[4:32] there's a quiet room nothing it's all

[4:36] happening in the mind so if that's the

[4:39] case see okay then you need to tackle

[4:41] the thoughts because they will cause the

[4:44] fear and how do you tackle thoughts is

[4:47] by refusing by realizing the futility

[4:50] and the destructive nature of these

[4:53] thoughts and choosing to step out and

[4:56] what do you do to step out first you

[5:00] don't believe your mind to turn see no

[5:02] you can't step out you have to secure

[5:03] continue thinking no you step out and

[5:07] take a conscious press or put you the

[5:10] attention into the inner energy field of

[5:12] the body a conscious choice to remove

[5:15] attention from thinking and you may have

[5:19] to be really alert to do it if you're

[5:21] immersed in this mind stream it could

[5:25] even be that it's so powerful that you

[5:27] just cannot get out it has such

[5:30] gravitational pull it pulls you but at

[5:33] least you know that this is what's

[5:35] happening so you see you there's a state

[5:37] where you cannot help yourself yet but

[5:40] at least there is the beginning of a

[5:43] beginning of a dis identification from

[5:47] it when you know that this is what is

[5:48] happening so yeah there's at least

[5:51] there's a part of you that knows this is

[5:53] not totally real this is the fierce

[5:56] being produced by my mind or the in

[5:58] those early stages you may not yet be

[6:01] able to step out of it it may be so

[6:03] strong that you're still totally in the

[6:05] grip of it but at least you know that

[6:07] you're in the grip of it the worst thing

[6:10] is to be in the grip of it and not even

[6:11] knowing it because you're so identified

[6:13] with it it's it is absolutely real to

[6:16] you so even to know that this is

[6:19] happening is

[6:20] do you step forward and then perhaps

[6:23] after while the energy exhausts itself a

[6:26] little bit of less and then you can

[6:28] begin to say ok you will step out of

[6:31] thought that those fearful thoughts

[6:33] because they are creating suffering and

[6:37] you [ __ ] take a conscious breath and

[6:41] another and another and then begin to

[6:46] feel the inner energy field of the body

[6:47] uh-huh Wow it's like a this huge burden

[6:55] is suddenly dropped away and then you

[7:01] look around this this is a form of

[7:07] awakening out of complete identification

[7:11] with thinking it is really is an

[7:14] awakening and you can observe it in

[7:16] yourself when you go so nice it's like a

[7:22] nightmares you you maybe everybody has

[7:25] experienced awakening from a nightmare

[7:28] and feeling such relief that you are in

[7:31] bed and it's safe you go and the same

[7:36] thing when you step out of fearful

[7:38] thought and become present and then see

[7:45] thought will have will then try to pull

[7:48] your attention back in that you can go

[7:50] [Music]

[7:51] come come this way

[7:56] and then you might you might one day

[7:59] consult comes do you follow it or don't

[8:01] you follow it if you follow it as just

[8:08] [Music]

[8:17] now it's also possible some people that

[8:20] the fear arises and you cannot detect

[8:24] any thought that created it it just

[8:27] comes wherever you are some moment

[8:31] suddenly intense fear comes that is

[8:34] possible too and that of course is what

[8:38] I call pain body which is accumulation

[8:41] of old emotions that lives in you and in

[8:45] there are many people who for whom the

[8:48] pain body manifests predominantly as

[8:52] anxiety of fear and it come can come up

[8:55] suddenly but usually then it flows into

[9:00] your mind also and produces fearful

[9:03] thoughts so fear can be you can in some

[9:07] cases some of if you still suffer from

[9:11] that affliction some of you may be able

[9:15] to see how your thoughts are generating

[9:17] the fear a bit chilly or you may find

[9:21] that in you the fear arises

[9:24] spontaneously and then usually produces

[9:28] further fearful thoughts and registers

[9:32] pain body wanting to feed on further

[9:35] experience of the same what makes up its

[9:38] life is the energetic frequency of fear

[9:42] which is a particularly you can feel

[9:44] what fear feels like it has a we call

[9:46] that a frequency it will sometimes if

[9:52] the body actually expresses it through

[9:55] shaking

[9:59] this is I'm watchin I'm doing this

[10:01] because I want to give it well I don't

[10:03] want I don't want frequency to be just a

[10:07] concept in your mind I want to give you

[10:09] a taste of what frequency means so

[10:11] perfectly

[10:19] let's frequency and then you have a

[10:28] different frequency of presence

[10:47] nothing is changed outside it's still

[10:50] the same room you're a totally different

[10:53] reality in the same place a totally

[10:58] different world in the same place as you

[11:02] shift from one frequency to different

[11:07] frequency

[11:10] [Music]

[11:33] you

The body cannot distinguish between an actual external threat and a threat the mind is creating through thought. When you think fearful thoughts about the future—imagining worst-case scenarios or projecting yourself into situations you cannot control—your body interprets these thoughts as a report of present danger and triggers a stress response (palpitations, shortness of breath), even though nothing threatening is actually occurring in the present moment.
No. You cannot stop thinking by trying to think less; that approach is futile. Instead, you must recognize the destructiveness of fearful thoughts and consciously redirect your attention away from them—shifting attention into the felt sense of your body, your breath, and the present moment. This disengages you from the thought-stream rather than fighting it.
The pain body is an accumulation of old, unresolved emotional energy that lives in your physical and energetic body. Some people experience it predominantly as sudden, free-floating anxiety or fear that seems to arise without a specific thought. The pain body then typically pulls in fearful thoughts to feed on, because fear is its frequency—the energetic signature that sustains it.
In early stages, very intense fearful thoughts may have such strong gravitational pull that you cannot fully escape them. However, even becoming aware that you are in the grip of fearful thought—creating some distance between yourself and the thought—is a crucial step. This dis-identification is the beginning of awakening out of the thought-stream. As you continue to redirect attention to presence, the fear-energy gradually exhausts itself.
Tolle describes it as similar to awakening from a nightmare—sudden relief and the realization of safety. When you shift from identification with fearful thought into awareness of what is actually happening right now, the fear dissolves. You see that your present-moment reality is fundamentally different from the imaginary threat your mind was projecting. This shift is both felt and perceptual; it is described as an awakening.
Thought patterns are habitual and deeply established. After you temporarily step out of fearful thought, the mind will attempt to re-engage your attention by re-presenting the fearful story. At that point, you have a choice: you can follow it back into the thought-stream, or you can choose to remain in presence. Remaining present weakens the thought's grip and returns you to a state of genuine freedom from fear.
No. This is not about replacing negative thoughts with positive ones or using imagination. It is about withdrawing attention and belief from the mind's fearful narratives altogether and shifting your awareness into actual present-moment reality—the felt aliveness of your body, the breath, the sensations available right now. This is a shift in frequency and identification, not a mental technique.
