Releasing Old Stories: LetGo Into Heart Flow

Trevor Hall
Trevor Hall
Sep 25, 2020
読了 約5分

Trevor Hall's song "The Old Story" (feat. Emory Hall) addresses the core spiritual problem of mental self-narratives that keep us locked in thought rather than present in the body and heart. The piece suggests that what we experience as external limitations are often self-imposed stories held only "in your head"—and that liberation comes through a deliberate letting-go: dropping the old story, allowing a "good river" to flow into the heart, and moving beyond the fear of who we might become if we released our familiar narrative framework.

What is the old story you keep playing?

The song opens with a direct challenge: "you could play it out / but all of it's in your head." This points to a fundamental teaching in contemplative traditions—that much of what we experience as reality is actually an internal narrative running continuously. The "old story" is the repeated mental pattern, the identity we rehearse, the explanation for why we are the way we are, why we're stuck, why we can't change. It's a story so habitual that we mistake it for truth.

Hall uses the image of "holding on with both two hands" to describe the grip of this narrative. We grip it tightly not because it serves us, but because it's familiar. Familiarity creates a false sense of safety—we know how this story goes, even if it's a story of limitation. The invitation is stark: "gotta let go." Not understand it better, not rewrite it more cleverly—let it go entirely.

Am I really knocking at my own door?

The next turn deepens the self-reflective quality: "is it really you / knocking at your own door." This suggests that the seeking itself—the constant reaching for something beyond, the feeling that we're separated from what we want—may be a function of our own consciousness creating distance from itself. We knock at our own door, looking for something more, not recognizing that we are both the knocker and the door. This is a non-dual insight: the separation we feel is constructed.

The repeated warning "don't be a fool / don't be a fool" addresses the self-deception at work. The fool here is not someone lacking intelligence, but someone who hasn't yet seen through the game—who still believes the old story is real, who still accepts the invented separation between the seeker and the sought.

How do you let the old story go?

The chorus presents the core practice: "you just gotta let that old story go / you just gotta let that good river flow into your heart / it's a start." Letting go is not an act of will or effort—it's a cessation. It requires not doing rather than doing. What opens when the grip loosens is described as a "good river"—a natural flow, not something you construct or earn. This river flows "into your heart," suggesting that presence in the body and heart is the destination, the natural state that emerges when the mental narrative stops monopolizing attention.

The phrase "it's a start" is significant. Hall isn't promising that one moment of release equals permanent freedom. Releasing the old story is ongoing work. Each time the narrative re-grips—as it will—there's another opportunity to notice and let go again.

What are you really running from?

The second verse shifts focus: "where you gonna run to if you're gonna run from here / only running from your own fear." This is a classical teaching on projection and avoidance. We believe we're running from external circumstances, people, situations. But Hall suggests the real fugitive is running from internal fear. And as the wisdom traditions have long observed, that which we run from gains speed—it "catches up now."

The only solution is acceptance: "gotta let it die / gotta let it go its own way." Fear, like any emotion, has its own lifecycle. If we stop fighting it or fleeing it, if we let it move through us and "go its own way," it loses its power. Resistance and avoidance are what keep fear alive.

Who will you be if you let the story go?

The final question cuts to the deepest resistance: "who will you be if you let it stay / i'm afraid / i'm afraid." Here is the real barrier to liberation. Releasing the old story isn't just a matter of understanding or even practice—it requires surrender of identity. If I'm not the person in that story, who am I? This is terrifying because it means losing the self we think we are, even though that self is a limiting fiction.

The repeated "i'm afraid" is raw acknowledgment. The fear of not-knowing-who-you-are is deeper than any surface fear. Yet the song doesn't offer false reassurance. It simply names the fear and, through its very naming and articulation, creates the possibility of moving through it rather than denying it.

The body as the real home

The project shares the album title "In and Through the Body," which reframes where presence and flow actually live. Not in thought, not in the story, not in some abstract spiritual realm—but in and through the body. The "good river" that flows into the heart is not metaphorical only; it's a felt experience, sensate and embodied. The work of releasing the old story is the work of returning from the head to the heart, from narrative to presence, from mind to body.

Where to go from here

If this teaching resonates, begin by noticing the old stories you play on repeat. What narrative about yourself, your limitations, your past, your future occupies most of your mental space? Can you observe it without judgment, the way you'd watch a movie you've seen before? Once seen clearly, the grip loosens naturally. Then practice returning to the body and heart—the place where the river flows. This isn't a final destination but a practice, renewed each moment you notice you've drifted back into the old story and choose, again, to let it go.

Letting the old story go means releasing the habitual mental narrative you use to define yourself and explain your limitations. It's a cessation of the grip you maintain on a familiar identity, allowing what's underneath—present awareness and heart-centered flow—to emerge naturally. This is not rewriting the story but stepping out of it entirely.
Your old story is the repeated explanation you give for who you are, what you're capable of, why you're stuck, or what you need to be complete. It's the narrative you unconsciously rehearse in thought, often so familiar that you believe it's objective truth rather than a constructed narrative.
The 'good river' is the natural flow of presence and life force that becomes available when you release the old story. Rather than being something you create or earn, it's what's already present beneath the mental noise—accessible through the body and heart when the narrative loosens its grip.
We often believe we're running from external circumstances, but Hall points out that the underlying driver is usually internal fear—fear of uncertainty, of losing identity, of what might emerge if we stopped controlling and defending the old story. Recognizing this shifts where the actual work needs to happen.
The old story lives in the head—in thought loops and mental patterns. Embodiment means returning attention to the body and heart, where presence and authentic flow actually live. 'In and Through the Body' is not just a title but the location where liberation from mental narratives becomes a lived reality.
It's ongoing. The song says 'it's a start,' suggesting that each moment offers a fresh opportunity to notice the old story has re-engaged and to let it go again. This isn't a permanent fix but a continuous practice of returning to presence.
The fear Hall names directly—'Who will you be if you let it stay?'—is the deepest resistance. Releasing identity means entering radical uncertainty. But rather than leading to emptiness, the traditions suggest it opens the door to authentic self, interconnection, and freedom from the exhaustion of maintaining a fictional narrative.
