[0:00] - Oh, by the way, when
you awaken spiritually,
[0:03] it doesn't mean this is
the end of challenges.
[0:06] (relaxing music)
[0:08] They don't stop.
[0:10] The only difference is,
[0:12] and it's a big difference,
[0:14] (relaxing music)
[0:16] you no longer unconsciously
transform the challenges
[0:22] of life into unhappiness.
[0:25] (bell ringing)
[0:30] The entire psychological
self that you think you are,
[0:35] that your identity that is derived from,
[0:40] whatever it is that your mind
identifies with your past,
[0:46] what happened to you in
your past, what you did,
[0:49] what people did to you, what you achieved,
[0:51] your successes, your failures,
[0:53] your sufferings, victories
and defeats from your past,
[0:58] they gradually, a story forms in the mind.
[1:03] And a story is thoughts,
[1:04] certain thoughts that
come together as a bundle.
[1:08] And so after, as you grow up
[1:10] and you become an adult and you grow,
[1:13] this becomes more developed.
[1:16] This mental image of who you are.
[1:19] And that becomes who you sense
yourself to be as a person.
[1:24] That becomes your personality.
[1:28] And that is the foundation
[1:31] for most people's sense of identity.
[1:34] That is all they know.
[1:37] And that is the unawakened
state of consciousness.
[1:43] So you are confined to this
ultimately mind made sense
[1:52] of self that consists of a storyline,
[1:58] a narrative that you think about
[2:01] and you call it my life.
[2:04] Me and my life.
[2:06] Hmm.
[2:07] And that exists in time.
[2:10] This is where the time
dimension becomes very important
[2:13] because the me and my life is me,
[2:18] the person that I am now,
[2:19] which is conditioned by my past.
[2:23] All the things from the past that is,
[2:25] that make up the person that I am now.
[2:28] And then future becomes
important for this me and my life
[2:34] because you can look to the
future as a destination,
[2:40] a source of possible greater fulfillment
[2:45] because strange thing is the sense of self
[2:51] that arises from the past,
[2:55] that is, that consists of a bundle
[2:59] of recurring thought forms
plus emotional transformations,
[3:06] a mental, emotional entity,
[3:10] that entity that you call me and my life
[3:14] is a lot of the time
spends each time worrying
[3:20] about me and my life and
considers itself problematic.
[3:28] Or you carry you as that
entity, you as that person.
[3:35] Everybody here carries a life
situation with him or herself.
[3:42] You carry a life situation with you.
[3:45] And everybody here has a certain set
[3:51] of problems in their life situation,
[3:56] which whether they are
related to your relationships,
[3:59] whether they're related
to your health situation,
[4:03] whether they're related to
your financial situation,
[4:06] your work situation, any of these areas.
[4:11] It's rare that you are totally,
[4:15] you are free of perceiving yourself
[4:18] as being kind of almost
burdened by problems.
[4:23] And that many people have
a view of the themselves,
[4:31] of their identity as a problem
to be solved unconsciously.
[4:37] They don't say it.
[4:38] They don't say, "I am a
problem to be solved."
[4:41] But there's an underlying current
[4:44] of unspoken thought that
says there's something
[4:49] that is not quite right here.
[4:53] And then you look at others,
[4:55] especially on Facebook,
[4:57] and you see they don't
have those problems.
[5:01] (audience laughing)
[5:04] So what's wrong with me?
[5:07] What's wrong?
[5:08] And even if you walk in the
street, they seem to be okay.
[5:13] And you could perceive,
[5:15] why am I always, have all
got that stuff going on?
[5:19] And then, of course, you
begin to pretend too.
[5:22] You don't know that the
others are pretending,
[5:24] but you are pretending.
[5:25] And then you start taking the selfies
[5:28] for your Facebook post.
[5:30] (audience laughing and clapping)
[5:39] So this mental image that people have,
[5:43] we now have the technology.
[5:47] Isn't that great?
[5:48] To amplify this mental image
[5:50] and send it out into the world.
[5:52] (audience laughing)
[5:54] And we can polish it up so
that it looks great out there.
[6:00] But the greater it looks
on your Facebook page,
[6:02] the worse you feel inside.
[6:04] (audience laughing)
[6:08] So the interesting fact
[6:12] is then that everybody carries the burden
[6:18] of their life situation.
[6:21] And whether it is a heavy
burden for you at this time,
[6:26] or whether it's a relatively
light burden for you
[6:30] at this time as you sit here may vary
[6:34] from person to person,
[6:36] but there is not a single person
[6:39] unless there's a baby here somewhere,
[6:43] there's not a single person
[6:45] who does not carry this burden
of their life situation,
[6:50] whether it's heavy or light at the moment.
[6:52] And it could change.
[6:54] If it's heavy today,
[6:55] it might not be heavy anymore tomorrow,
[6:58] but then it'll be heavy
again another time.
[7:02] And that's an interesting fact.
[7:05] And that is part of a
person's sense of identity
[7:10] is what I call the life situation.
[7:14] What is me and my story.
[7:17] And there's always,
[7:19] and that's a strange fact.
[7:21] There's always something missing.
[7:24] There's always a sense,
[7:26] an underlying sense of I am not enough.
[7:30] I haven't arrived yet.
[7:34] There is a search ultimately
for greater fulfillment,
[7:39] a search for yourself ultimately,
[7:41] for a better version of yourself.
[7:44] Now, there's nothing wrong with engaging
[7:49] in activities that help
you learn a new skill
[7:53] or acquire new knowledge.
[7:56] And so you gradually be,
[7:58] you become a better version of yourself.
[8:01] You become, let's say you
acquire better education
[8:05] or whatever it is, a
skill, dance, whatever.
[8:10] That's fine.
[8:11] But whatever it is you acquire,
[8:15] on one level, you can improve yourself.
[8:18] No doubt.
[8:20] But on a deeper level,
[8:22] that sense of dissatisfaction
[8:25] will resurface again and again.
[8:29] And no matter what you achieve or attain,
[8:32] for a little while, sometimes it happens
[8:34] that a person is totally feeling,
[8:38] now I'm fully myself.
[8:39] I have arrived.
[8:41] This happens.
[8:43] It could happen when you win the lottery.
[8:46] And there's been many things
written about lottery winners.
[8:49] Many of them became more unhappy
after winning the lottery.
[8:53] There's a moment of elation
[8:56] and then there was greater unhappiness.
[9:01] So there's that sense of,
[9:03] the underlying sense of not enough.
[9:06] Not enough yet.
[9:07] I'm not enough.
[9:10] And you never actually arrive.
[9:14] And then you reach retirement age
[9:18] and you suddenly realize
[9:20] that you've always been
waiting to start living.
[9:28] And that's a pity.
[9:30] You've, without knowing it,
[9:31] you've always been living
[9:33] for the next moment or
some other future moment
[9:36] and thought, I'm going to get there.
[9:39] One day, I'm going to make it whatever.
[9:44] It's a weird expression.
[9:46] Make it really, make yourself, I suppose.
[9:50] That's one day I'm going to make it.
[9:53] And ultimately, several
times, you think you made it.
[9:56] But then you realize the,
[9:59] your life situation again sabotages you.
[10:04] That's what it does.
[10:06] You might have noticed.
[10:07] You do your best.
[10:09] (audience laughing)
[10:10] You do your best, your best
intentions, and you should.
[10:15] But no matter how good your intention,
[10:17] how well-focused you are,
[10:19] and how much positive thinking you do,
[10:22] which are all great things.
[10:23] I'm not saying don't do them. Do them.
[10:26] But even there, you do
not escape this fact
[10:32] that challenges come one after another.
[10:37] And challenges sometimes come
[10:39] in the form of some form of chaos.
[10:47] It is good to strive for order,
[10:50] but no matter how good you are
[10:52] in bringing about order in your life,
[10:56] and it's a great thing,
[10:58] you will periodically
encounter the eruption
[11:03] of disorder in your life,
[11:06] whether it's an illness
[11:07] or some kind of loss
[11:09] or some huge drama in your
relationship or toxic.
[11:16] You might have noticed, by the way,
[11:18] a great source of challenge in your life,
[11:22] one of the greatest, apart from the fact
[11:26] that as you grow older,
[11:27] the body is being consumed,
[11:31] that a great source of challenge
[11:35] in your life is human beings.
[11:38] (audience laughing)
[11:41] So if you look,
[11:42] your life situation,
[11:44] you realize where does my,
[11:47] of all that suffering
with that unhappiness,
[11:50] where does that come from?
[11:51] It's other people.
[11:53] (audience laughing)
[11:57] And sometimes, the very people
[11:59] that make you happy for a few years,
[12:01] suddenly the very same
people make you unhappy.
[12:05] (audience laughing)
[12:07] The person you fall in love with today,
[12:14] five years from now,
[12:17] you hate each other at the divorce court.
[12:21] The worst person you ever met.
[12:23] (audience laughing)
[12:30] So everybody carries a life situation.
[12:34] And there's a certain
heaviness to a life situation.
[12:38] And if you are totally trapped
in your life situation,
[12:43] you think about it,
[12:45] you talk about it compulsively.
[12:50] Either you think about it in your head
[12:52] or you talk about it to others.
[12:56] The more you are trapped in it,
[12:57] the more unsatisfying your life is.
[13:03] That is really the temporal dimension
[13:06] because you as the person,
you as a personality,
[13:10] you that has a life situation,
[13:13] you that is the story
of me, me and my story,
[13:18] that exists in time.
[13:22] And the wonderful thing
is there is a way out.
[13:31] There is a dimension of consciousness
[13:35] where you are not trapped on that level.
[13:41] So one could almost say
[13:42] that you can get off that speeding train.
[13:49] But not as a, not with your physical body.
[13:54] But there is a possibility
[13:57] of transcending a sense of identity
[14:02] that is exclusively derived
[14:07] from mental emotional patterns in you
[14:12] because that's what the
person or the personality is.
[14:17] Now, most humans don't even know that.
[14:22] But there's,
[14:23] the ancient teachers pointed
[14:26] to it using different signposts.
[14:30] Buddha said, "Life is suffering."
[14:36] What did I just talk about?
[14:38] I just didn't use those terms.
[14:40] Buddha said, "Life is suffering."
[14:43] But he also said, "I teach suffering."
[14:46] He said, "And the end of
suffering," which means,
[14:52] when he said, "I teach suffering"
[14:53] is he meant I show you
how suffering arises.
[14:59] And when he said, "And
the end of suffering,"
[15:03] what he meant was I show
you how suffering can end.
[15:09] Lovely statement.
[15:10] I teach suffering and
the end of suffering.
[15:13] So the Buddha talks
[15:15] about the possibility
of the end of suffering.
[15:19] Jesus talks about the necessity of
[15:22] or the possibility of
what is called salvation.
[15:28] And in other spiritual
traditions, other terms are used.
[15:31] Liberation, awakening.
[15:35] So they all pointed to it
using different signposts,
[15:39] different terminology.
[15:42] And yet very few humans realized
[15:46] what they were talking about.
[15:47] So even, like Christians,
[15:49] most Christians don't
know what salvation is.
[15:53] They might think an
emotional high is salvation
[15:57] or a certain belief.
[15:58] You say, "I believe this,"
[16:00] which is a story in your head
[16:02] that you don't question.
[16:04] Thought.
[16:05] In other words, thought forms.
[16:07] There's a story in your head
and say, "This is how it is."
[16:11] You don't question.
[16:12] I believe in this narrative.
[16:15] And then they say, "This
narrative will save you
[16:18] if you believe in it."
[16:20] I would suggest to you
[16:22] that what Jesus was pointing
[16:23] to was much deeper than that.
[16:26] But there was a,
[16:28] the beautiful truth hiding there.
[16:34] Obviously hiding because he don't,
[16:36] very rarely do you
actually hear the depths
[16:39] of the teaching explained
to you in churches.
[16:46] So it is possible,
[16:47] there is a possibility of transcendence.
[16:51] You can internally transcend
the limitations of the person,
[16:59] which doesn't mean you
are no longer a person.
[17:02] You continue to be a person.
[17:04] You also continue to have a life situation
[17:07] and you continue to be challenged by life.
[17:11] The difference is, oh, by the way,
[17:13] when you awaken spiritually,
[17:15] it doesn't mean it is
the end of challenges.
[17:19] (audience laughing)
[17:23] Really? Oh.
[17:25] (audience laughing)
[17:28] They keep coming.
[17:31] They don't stop.
[17:33] The only difference is,
[17:34] and it's a big difference,
[17:37] you no longer unconsciously
transform the challenges
[17:43] of life into unhappiness.
[17:48] You no longer transform
the challenges of life
[17:52] into an unhappy me, an
unhappy sense of self,
[17:58] a dissatisfied person with an,
[18:08] in the background, always
a sense of dissatisfaction,
[18:12] discontent, irritation, not enough.
[18:18] But sometimes, of course, you smile.
[18:25] How are you?
[18:27] Great. I'm just great.
[18:29] (audience laughing)
[18:34] Haven't you seen my Facebook page on...
[18:37] (audience laughing)
[18:44] This is a food I'm eating now.
[18:46] (audience laughing)
[18:59] Now as the Buddha said,
[19:05] "I show you suffering. I teach suffering.
[19:08] I show you how suffering arises."
[19:10] Now, how does it ultimately arise?
[19:12] How does the unhappiness,
[19:15] let's use that kind of
generic term, unhappiness,
[19:20] which could be all kinds of things.
[19:21] Unhappiness starts with
a slight irritation
[19:25] when you're waiting in line
and the line is not moving
[19:28] and you have a slight irritation
[19:29] and you're beginning to be unhappy
[19:33] and then it builds up into
something more perhaps.
[19:36] Or unhappiness is when you arrive home
[19:39] and your house has gone up in flames.
[19:41] A little bit more on happiness.
[19:42] (audience laughing)
[19:46] Or unhappiness is when
suddenly your spouse leaves you
[19:50] and you go bankrupt and you lose your job
[19:53] and you don't know what's
going to happen next month,
[19:56] where you're going to live.
[19:57] Another form of unhappiness.
[19:59] Many forms of unhappiness can arise.
[20:02] But when you look at the,
[20:09] you need a little bit
of awareness to detect.
[20:12] And this is already kind of the beginning
[20:14] of a spiritual awakening.
[20:17] When you develop the ability
[20:20] to know what's going on in your mind.
[20:24] And when you develop,
[20:25] and this is awareness slowly arising.
[20:29] When you develop the ability
[20:30] to know what your mind is doing,
[20:33] what your thoughts are
going through your head,
[20:36] then you may detect where does
the unhappiness come from?
[20:44] Does it come?
[20:45] And you can then divide it
into two types of unhappiness.
[20:49] One is completely unrelated
to an actual event out there.
[20:56] It's entirely produced by
dysfunctional thinking.
[21:00] A typical example of that would be worry.
[21:04] You wake up in the middle of the night
[21:06] and you start to worry.
[21:10] Worry means you have created scenarios
[21:13] in your thoughts about things going wrong.
[21:17] You create scenarios about
things which you might lose,
[21:22] things you might not get, but you need.
[21:24] Something may happen to you
[21:25] and you play it out in your mind.
[21:27] You worry about problems
that you say you have.
[21:31] But while you worry, there's no,
[21:33] worry is never given a
solution to anything.
[21:35] It's just pointless
going around in your mind
[21:38] and you don't even know it.
[21:40] Many people are addicted.
[21:42] There's no awareness there.
[21:44] They are addicted to worrying.
[21:46] Their sense, their
personality, to a large part,
[21:50] is a worrying personality.
[21:53] Take the worrying away
[21:55] and a huge chunk of their
personality is suddenly gone.
[21:59] Of course, they don't want that.
[22:00] They want to hang on to that.
[22:01] I need to worry.
[22:03] Well, I mean if I don't worry,
[22:04] I'm not not taking
responsibility for me, am I?
[22:08] Everybody worries, don't they?
[22:10] When I look at movies, they worry.
[22:12] Everybody worries. You have to worry.
[22:15] Okay, let me worry a bit more.
[22:16] (audience laughing)
[22:21] Now, worry is a very good example
[22:23] of dysfunctional thinking
[22:25] and it produces an emotion.
[22:28] It's not just in the mind.
[22:30] You have certain types of thinking.
[22:33] The body reacts, responds
to the the thinking
[22:36] and creates an emotion
[22:37] that reflects the type of thinking.
[22:40] The energetic frequency of that thinking.
[22:43] The story that you create in your mind.
[22:46] The body can't tell the difference
[22:48] between an actual real event out there
[22:51] and something that only
your mind is creating.
[22:54] So when your mind is
creating critical situation,
[22:57] your body believes that you
are in a critical situation.
[23:00] Or you're lying in bed
at three in the morning.
[23:03] It is very nice and warm and soft.
[23:06] But you are in a critical
situation in your mind.
[23:10] (audience laughing)
[23:12] And the body believes this is bad.
[23:16] And then you experience the emotion
[23:17] that you would experience
if you were really
[23:20] in a critical situation. (laughs)
[23:22] And then that becomes,
[23:24] and the emotion fuels even
more that type of thinking.
[23:29] So you're trapped in a vicious circle.
[23:31] And so there are human beings
[23:33] who are burdened with these personalities
[23:37] that continuously produce
totally superfluous,
[23:43] unnecessary unhappiness.
[23:44] All unhappiness is
ultimately not on purpose.
[23:46] But in this particular case,
[23:48] this type of unhappiness has nothing
[23:50] to do at all with any situation
[23:53] that's actually happening.
[23:55] It's created by dysfunctional thinking.
[24:00] Dysfunctional thinking
here means every thought
[24:04] that comes into your head absorbs
[24:07] your consciousness totally,
[24:09] and that you, when I say
identify, this is the key.
[24:14] When you identify with thought,
[24:17] there's a sense of me,
[24:19] a self in every thought.
[24:20] There's no space between you,
[24:23] who you ultimately are beyond thought.
[24:27] You're totally unaware of
who you are beyond thought
[24:30] because you're so totally identified
[24:33] with that voice in the head
that never stops talking.
[24:38] It goes on and on.
[24:41] Why don't you shut up?
[24:43] Shut up. But that's the voice too.
[24:45] (audience laughing)
[24:46] That's just another aspect of the voice.
[24:48] It says, "Why can't you
shut up, shut up, shut up."
[24:52] Well, that's the voice also.
[24:54] (audience laughing)
So that doesn't work.
[25:00] And some people are so unconscious.
[25:02] When I say you have a voice in the head
[25:04] that never stops talking, they say,
[25:07] "What are you talking about? What voice?
[25:09] I don't have a voice."
[25:10] What is that one?
[25:12] (audience laughing)
[25:13] Oh.
[25:15] So from anybody who is not,
[25:17] who is totally identified with mind,
[25:22] is spiritually trapped in
that particular dimension.
[25:28] So you have unhappiness arising simply
[25:34] as a product of your mind,
[25:36] even without an external challenge.
[25:40] And then you have other
types of unhappiness arising
[25:44] because there is an external
challenge in your life.
[25:48] There is a difficult
relationship situation.
[25:51] There is a difficult work situation,
[25:54] a difficult financial situation,
[25:56] a difficult health situation.
[25:58] So you might think,
[25:59] well, I'm fully justified in being unhappy
[26:02] because let me tell you about
what's going on in my life.
[26:07] And then you will tell me that yes,
[26:10] you have a right to be unhappy.
[26:12] (audience laughing)
[26:14] And so, yes.
[26:17] But if you look more
closely at those things,
[26:21] and again, it requires a
certain degree of awareness.
[26:26] When you seemingly become unhappy,
[26:29] and I'm using, again, just reminding you,
[26:31] I'm using this as a generic term.
[26:34] It could be anything
from slight irritation
[26:37] to extreme anger or extreme sadness
[26:41] or anything in between
[26:45] or even an undercurrent of unhappiness,
[26:52] which many, many people,
[26:53] almost everybody has
unless they have awakened.
[26:57] There's an undercurrent of
dissatisfaction, of unease.
[27:02] And it comes in every situation.
[27:04] Whether they know it or not,
[27:05] there's an undercurrent there.
[27:08] That's also, it's emotional.
[27:11] These are emotions that have been created
[27:14] by years and years of
dysfunctional thinking
[27:17] and that undercurrent is there.
[27:20] So something in your life
situation is challenging.
[27:27] We can look at one small example
[27:29] of how unhappiness arises.
[27:34] Let's say, let's just something
seemingly insignificant.
[27:38] But life is full of
seemingly little things
[27:41] and they accumulate.
[27:43] So if you become irritated
[27:44] with one little thing
after another little thing
[27:47] after another little thing,
[27:48] that eventually grows and
becomes part of your personality
[27:53] and you become an irritated person.
[27:55] And the irritated person is actually,
[27:58] without knowing it, looking
for more irritation.
[28:04] (audience laughing)
[28:05] Just waiting.
[28:06] Just the slightest thing to go wrong.
[28:08] It's going, "Ah."
[28:09] (audience laughing)
[28:12] And then you make a
phone call to your bank.
[28:16] Please wait.
[28:17] We appreciate your call,
[28:19] but we are in the Philippines
[28:22] and we can't answer immediately.
[28:24] (audience laughing)
[28:26] Well, they don't say that.
[28:27] You have to wait. Please wait.
[28:31] Okay, there you are.
[28:34] And five minutes pass.
[28:37] We value your call very much.
[28:39] (audience laughing)
[28:42] But there's nobody that's ready.
[28:43] Okay.
[28:45] And then the mind starts saying things,
[28:48] if it hasn't started already.
[28:50] This is dreadful. How can they do that?
[28:52] I'm going to change banks.
[28:54] But they're all the same, aren't they?
[28:55] But they, why can't they do?
[28:59] Why do I always, can't I get
a human being to talk to?
[29:02] What is the, what's wrong with them?
[29:06] I hate this whole civilization anyway.
[29:08] What am I?
[29:09] (audience laughing)
[29:13] All kinds of things.
[29:15] And you become unhappy if
you weren't unhappy already
[29:18] because you were probably a
little bit unhappy already.
[29:21] And then it grows.
[29:23] And then you're dealing
with the next thing.
[29:25] Or if you're lucky, you get
a lovely Filipino person
[29:28] that says, "Hi, how are you?"
[29:30] Oh, but you have to be open.
[29:33] If you're not open,
[29:34] you don't even know that
there's another soul.
[29:36] Finally, there's a human being there,
[29:39] but you don't even know that anymore.
[29:41] I've been waiting for 25 minutes on this.
[29:47] (audience laughing)
[29:48] And then the next thing
comes up in your life
[29:50] and you're already bringing
that into that situation.
[29:55] And there goes an irritated
person, an angry person.
[30:00] And then you have to go to the
airport and you wait in line.
[30:03] It is not moving.
[30:07] (audience laughing)
[30:09] Why can't they? Why don't they?
[30:11] They're completely incompetent.
[30:13] What's the stall?
[30:15] Now if you look.
[30:17] How does the unhappiness arise?
[30:19] And you again needs a
little bit of awareness
[30:23] so that you are aware of
what your mind is doing.
[30:25] If you're totally
identified with your mind,
[30:27] you don't even know what's going on.
[30:28] You are the thoughts.
[30:31] Every thought has a self in it,
[30:32] a sense of self in it.
[30:34] If there's an awareness,
[30:35] you can suddenly see,
[30:37] oh, where is the unhappiness arising?
[30:41] Is it because I'm sitting
[30:44] or standing here waiting for this or that?
[30:47] Or is it because I am
telling myself something
[30:51] about sitting here waiting
and about standing here?
[30:56] It does that?
[30:57] Where is the unhappiness coming from?
[31:00] Could it be that the narrative
[31:03] that I have created around
this particular situation,
[31:07] rather than the situation,
[31:09] is causing the unhappiness?
[31:11] Hmm.
[31:13] It's possible.
[31:14] But you have to figure it, try it out.
[31:17] Now how?
[31:18] Because you've got plenty of time
[31:19] because they're not answering the phone.
[31:21] (audience laughing)
[31:23] So you investigate.
[31:25] It's a spiritual investigation
while you're waiting.
[31:30] How would I experience this situation
[31:32] if I did not add these thoughts to it?
[31:37] If I didn't add the unnecessary,
[31:42] possibly unnecessary
burden of thought to it,
[31:47] how would I experience this moment
[31:48] without the addition of a narrative?
[31:53] Okay, let's find out.
[31:54] I've got plenty of time.
[31:58] And so there you are,
holding the receiver.
[32:02] Okay.
[32:04] Well, I would experience
this moment as I'm breathing.
[32:09] I can feel myself breathing.
[32:12] And I'm looking out the window.
[32:16] And I'm looking around the room.
[32:21] And as I'm breathing, I can
feel the energy in my body.
[32:29] There's the energy that's,
[32:31] the body is alive and I
can feel that it is alive.
[32:34] I've got nothing else to do right now.
[32:37] (audience laughing)
[32:38] I can feel the body is alive.
[32:40] There's an aliveness that
pervades every cell of the body.
[32:46] And suddenly you now realize what this is
[32:50] without the addition of thought.
[32:54] Without the addition of thought that says,
[32:57] "This should not be happening."
[33:02] Because ultimately,
that's what it's saying.
[33:04] "This should not be happening."
[33:06] Or it might say, "This should
not be happening to me."
[33:09] Or it says, "Why is this
always happening to me?"
[33:13] (audience laughing)
[33:15] That's the type of thought.
[33:17] And then you experience,
[33:18] okay, that's a relatively small situation,
[33:21] but you're looking into
the origin of unhappiness.
[33:25] So you can become free
in little situations
[33:29] of the mental, emotional,
reactive patterns that before,
[33:36] you were completely identified with.
[33:39] So identified that they became you,
[33:44] that they became part of your personality,
[33:46] part of the person.
[33:49] And so that's an amazing thing.
[33:51] And then you can, after awhile,
[33:54] these are all little challenges in life.
[33:57] And then occasionally, a
bigger challenge comes.
[33:59] And again, and a big challenge comes.
[34:02] You lose your job.
[34:04] You go to a doctor and
there's a health challenge.
[34:09] Relationship comes to an end
[34:13] or relationship is very
difficult and toxic.
[34:19] Something collapses around you.
[34:22] And again, you can, there it is a similar,
[34:25] yes, you are, you realize
there is a challenge here.
[34:29] And you realize that it may be necessary
[34:32] to take some action.
[34:34] But in the meantime, you
can experiment and see.
[34:41] This requires, by the way, more developed,
[34:45] more intense presence
[34:47] when a bigger challenge
comes into your life.
[34:50] But you've practiced
already with little things.
[34:52] Telephone calls and
lineups in the supermarket
[34:55] and airport and countless other things.
[34:58] So you've already been
successfully practicing with that.
[35:02] Just getting ready for
the next big challenge
[35:04] to come into your life.
[35:05] And it will come.
[35:08] And there it comes, like...
[35:09] (Eckhart imitating the sound of a wave)
[35:11] (audience laughing)
[35:13] And then you have already
developed the muscle.
[35:17] Presence power in you has already grown.
[35:20] The ability to relinquish
dysfunctional thinking
[35:27] and being able to be with a
situation as it is right now
[35:35] without the addition of this burden,
[35:39] of superfluous suffering creating thought.
[35:45] So you've developed that already.
[35:47] And then the big challenge
comes and there you are.
[35:53] Let's say you lose your job
[35:55] and one day you go to the office
[35:59] and the boss says the famous expression.
[36:05] They don't usually say, "You are fired."
[36:08] That's somewhere else in...
[36:09] (audience laughing)
[36:12] In New York somewhere,
they'll say, "You are fired."
[36:16] But usually, they're much more kind.
[36:18] Say, "I'm afraid we'll
have to let you go."
[36:22] (audience laughing)
[36:23] As if you had been longing
to go for a long time.
[36:26] (audience laughing)
[36:30] And perhaps you have.
[36:31] You just didn't know it.
[36:34] We'll have to let you go.
[36:35] Really? Oh, thank you so much.
[36:38] (audience laughing)
[36:40] Finally, they're letting me go.
[36:42] (audience laughing)
[36:47] We'll have to let you go.
[36:49] But usually it's not,
[36:51] people usually react as...
[36:56] And there comes a
slightly bigger challenge
[36:58] because who knows how you're going
[37:00] to pay the mortgage next month?
[37:02] Who knows?
[37:04] Then there we go.
[37:11] And if presence has grown in you,
[37:14] you can then walk out of
the office building with a,
[37:18] carrying the box of your
belongings from your office
[37:22] and then you put it in your car
[37:24] and then you sit in your car.
[37:27] And again, you question.
[37:29] If I didn't add any thought to this,
[37:32] how would I experience this moment?
[37:36] It is as it is.
[37:37] And right at this moment,
it's actually fine.
[37:43] It's actually,
[37:44] this moment is actually
better than it would be
[37:47] if I were still stuck in the office.
[37:49] (audience laughing)
[37:52] This moment certainly.
[37:54] Now the mind says,
[37:55] "Yeah, but you've got the
future to think about."
[37:59] And, of course, yes.
[38:02] You may have to take action.
[38:05] But the question is how,
[38:07] what is the quality of your consciousness
[38:09] in the present moment?
[38:11] Because that determines what
kind of action you take.
[38:17] Is the basis for your
action a sense of fear
[38:22] or anger or panic?
[38:26] I need to find another job.
[38:29] And then if you go, if
you get another interview,
[38:31] you're so tense that they don't want you.
[38:35] They say, "No, we can't have
a nervous person like that."
[38:38] (audience laughing)
[38:42] But so you differentiate
between taking action
[38:46] and even perhaps focusing
your mind on what is it
[38:50] that I can do to,
[38:52] what steps can I take?
[38:53] What are the possibilities?
[38:56] I usually, when I do something like that,
[38:58] I get a piece, I'm a paper and pen person.
[39:01] I write it down in a piece of paper
[39:03] and then see the possibilities.
[39:05] And then you return into
this present moment.
[39:09] You develop the ability
[39:11] to always have your
conscious attention anchored
[39:17] in the present moment rather
than in your thinking mind.
[39:23] So you're it, this is the,
[39:27] you're becoming aligned
with the present moment.
[39:31] And it requires, I must admit,
[39:35] some situations require more
intense presence than others.
[39:41] If it's a bigger thing,
more intense presence.
[39:44] You go to the doctor's
office and the doctor says,
[39:48] "Okay, you have about 12 months
[39:53] and then maybe not beyond."
[39:56] That's a big challenge.
[39:58] It's a huge challenge because it means...
[40:02] But by the way, he may be wrong.
[40:04] But it means time has been taken,
[40:08] virtually been taken away from you.
[40:11] It's like some deity,
[40:14] malevolent deity or maybe a good deity
[40:19] that suddenly just you have no more time
[40:26] because you had been looking
[40:28] for some kind
self-fulfillment through time,
[40:31] unless you're 95 years old.
[40:33] But maybe even then.
[40:36] You've been looking for self-fulfillment,
[40:39] for some kind of
completion of who you are,
[40:42] of the story you want.
[40:44] You want the happy ending
of the story of me.
[40:48] Of course it never comes,
but don't tell anybody.
[40:51] The happy ending of the
story of me never comes.
[40:54] And then somebody takes
away time from you.
[40:57] And that could be the most dreadful shock
[41:01] to you as a person because
then you mentally go somewhere
[41:07] that doesn't exist anymore.
[41:11] No more vacation.
[41:13] No more this. No more that.
[41:17] And so some people have become terribly,
[41:23] terribly dreadfully
unhappy in that situation,
[41:28] which has only been normal, I suppose.
[41:30] One would say normal.
[41:33] But others have become intensely present
[41:39] through having no more time.
[41:42] And they went,
[41:43] I've met some, and some,
[41:47] the body began to deteriorate
more and more, more quickly.
[41:51] And they were like luminous lights.
[41:57] They were just sitting
there looking at me.
[42:01] And I remember a lady years ago
[42:04] who came to see me when I
was still seeing people.
[42:08] She had developed this illness.
[42:12] Only had a few more months.
[42:14] And she was just,
[42:15] every time she came,
she was more luminous.
[42:17] You know, just sit there and
we were just present together.
[42:21] (Echkart imitating fire sizzling)
[42:23] There was nobody left.
[42:24] There was no person left.
[42:27] There was only a space
of conscious presence.
[42:32] So the person had been
burned up completely by this.
[42:37] That was amazing how,
[42:39] there's another thing I
read a couple of years ago.
[42:43] There was a musician in England.
[42:47] Apparently quite famous,
[42:48] but I had never heard of him,
[42:49] which doesn't mean anything.
[42:52] So there was a pop musician.
[42:54] And he went to the doctor.
[42:56] I don't know if he's
still alive now or not.
[42:58] He went to the doctor
and he says, he told him,
[43:01] the doctor told him something like that.
[43:03] And this is a very rare case.
[43:05] He said in an interview.
[43:07] He walked out of the doctor's office
[43:10] in a state of enormous elation.
[43:15] He was just, and suddenly
he said he was able
[43:20] to enjoy every moment intensely.
[43:25] And he said, "Why didn't
I do this before?"
[43:30] And what happened to him?
[43:31] So some people are forced
into awakening by a situation.
[43:38] Now, any big challenge in
your life potentially is that.
[43:45] It is a way of how life
forces you into awakening.
[43:53] And there are some people
who have never come
[43:55] into touch with any spiritual teaching
[43:58] and it happened to them.
[43:59] Others encounter intense suffering.
[44:05] And they suffer and suffer.
[44:06] And then they come into contact
[44:08] with the spiritual teaching that points
[44:10] to the possibility of transcendence.
[44:13] And suddenly, the very
same suffering situation
[44:16] suddenly becomes the opening.
